Forums - General - 76% of Britons are not religious

I don't really know anyone who considers themself a proper religious Christian. Some people are that kind of sort-of-Christian characterised by apathy about the whole thing, but most seem to be agnostic or atheists. I probably know more practising Muslims than practising Christians.

The 61% of people who think Britain should be a Christian country worry me somewhat. Britain should be a secular country, like every developed nation in the world, including Turkey which is a good 95% Muslim. Christianity should be permitted, but I think the idea of having bishops in government is already taking it just a little bit too far.

Great! Though it definitely doesn't feel that way where I am. Almost everyone in my school is either muslim or christian, maybe only 5-10% would call themselves atheist/agnostic. I'm in Brent though, the most multi-cultural area in Europe, so this is an anomaly.

Historically and culturally (though not anymore), Britain could be called Christian, but thankfully christians are becoming a minority here according to the polls. (No offence)

About 90% of the people in my school aren't religious, I don't know many religious people either.

Lucky you. Today someone told me they didn't believe in evaporation. "God moves water around in his own way" he said.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

"Exactly, this is my point, He seems to be saying that a lot of people were predicting world peace when I don't think that's the case at all."

Of course your a man with common sense, only fools believe in such logic.

As there are idiotic religious people there are a few rather delusional people I know my self who think all of the worlds problems are due to Religion.

Its that this study does not really mean anything about how great or how terrible of a society Britain is.

Does not matter if you believe in God or Not, we will continue to make stupid choices and are making stupid choices and will make stupid choices for some time. Stupidity is not derived from our belief in a higher power lol !

Being irreligious does not automatically make you immune from stupidity. If being more irreligious= being smarter, Europe would not be in so much trouble.
I am not suggesting Europe should look to God to fix its problems either lol.

Point being a poll showing a society becoming irreligious is not really anything to celebrate. What is more useful is polls suggesting people are fed up with politics, corruption and are more willing to engage in society.

I hope you get my point that this issue is nowhere near as simplistic as some of us make it think.

Well while I wish their was a larger amount of Christians in the population it is still good to know that most British citizens aren't anti religion. Embracing Christianity as very important to the fabric of British society. Seriously I am pretty happy with these results it shows the hatred of religion is not spreading as fast as it appears. That Atheists aren't all hate filled people like it appears so often.

A secular society that embraces religion and ackwoledges their heritage and accepts those of both their faith and others is very good. It shows the atheist and religious radicals extremist tyrants are not winning.

Yeah I agree if a society becomes secular but tolerant of religion, that is the best outcome.

If we become a society vengeful against Religion, it would be rather hypocritical.

I wish that 76% of the world was not religious... but Well done BRITS!!!!!

Switch!!!

as I said explain how has that resulted in Britain being a better society?

Religious Education

Aah ok.

I bet you loved it eh

I didn't mind it actually, I thought it utterly pointless so it was kinda like a free lesson. Most of my family were religious at the time and I never had anything against it (religion I mean)

Now though, I still believe it's utterly pointless and should be scraped in favour of teaching kids about finances and such, stuff kids need to knows these days growing up, rather than religion which the majority couldn't give a hoot about.

Yea, I was put into a Christian private school when I grew up near Columbus, Ohio.  I went up to 5th grade.  Basically, the Bible class (I believe it was the first period) was just pure memorization of verses.  I believe they looked a little into what each verse meant but for the homework / grade you would have to memorize the verse and repeat it in front of the class.  I suppose it helped a little with public speaking and memorization.  Although I hate just memorizing things such as definitions.  I am more of a concept learner.  Like learn and explain the water cycle.  I don't give a fuck what scientific name attaches to a common name for plant or animal. If I wanted to know I'd look it up.

I am not Christian anymore and haven't been since about 15 or 16 (I pretty much say 16 when a friend that went to same church killed himself is when I stopped going to church then all my previous doubts of the faith started to come back, like how the fuck is Noah's Ark even possible (it isn't)).  Just rambling here but I thought it was funny that I was raised in such good attention to keep the faith of my family and yet I have come to reject it.  I still hold most of the values of Christianity though (such as help the poor (which most the time they don't do enough of), respect the Earth (which they forget about too), not to kill, rape, etc..)  Most of it is basic morals though.
