Even in the PS2 hangs in there for another year, GTAIV will kill San Andreas sales.  So, no.

 No it will never beat out SMB3.  SMB3 is also on the SNES, GBA and Wii in one form or another.  Combine all those sales together.

 No kidding, it sucks to be Luigi.  There's 3 times more Luigi than Mario in Super Mario Galaxy, but look whose name gets top billing.

 For mascots, indeed, Mario is king of kings.  Easily the most recognized video game mascot ever, owing no doubt to the fact that he's been around for the last 20 or 30 years and been featured in well over twice as many games as most mascots ever get.

I have several arguments in defense of GTA: SA:

First, it makes more sense to count multiple platforms for SA as all versions are direct ports, unlike SMB3 (obviously counting Mario All-Stars is ridiculous).

Second, you only counted PS2 and Xbox versions of SA, not PC (or the trilogy releases).

Third, and by far the most important: regardless of sales, GTA: SA claims the moral victory by being an infinitely superior game on every level. Hell, the frickin' mini-games in SA are more complex than Mario's 2D outings.

But I guess since this is a sales site, that argument is not gonna hold a lot of water... and will likely get me a lot of abuse from pre-teens and Peter Pan-types.

Super Mario 3 is in a class waaaaaaaaaaay higher than GTA SA.
Comparing these two would be like comparing a fine Ferrari to a whimpy Mercedes. Not sales wise but quality wise.
Although If you are a teenager I guess you would like GTA:SA better though.

As others have pointed out, if you want to count remakes and ports, you probably should also count the GBA version and VC sales. Otherwise there is no reason for you original post.

Also your comparision is not fair because you are comparing the market at the time of NES with the market at PS which was much bigger.

Who on earth is still buying san andreas? it's like £2 second hand.
Anyway, I think that if you add the VC sales of SMB3 over the past few months, it has sold better than san andreas ovver the same time period...

Does anyone know any of the VC sales?
