Super Mario 3 is in a class waaaaaaaaaaay higher than GTA SA.
Comparing these two would be like comparing a fine Ferrari to a whimpy Mercedes. Not sales wise but quality wise.
Although If you are a teenager I guess you would like GTA:SA better though.
As others have pointed out, if you want to count remakes and ports, you probably should also count the GBA version and VC sales. Otherwise there is no reason for you original post.
Also your comparision is not fair because you are comparing the market at the time of NES with the market at PS which was much bigger.
