Because we don't assume games are coming to platforms unless they're announced for them? Seems simple enough to me. |
Unfortunately that mind set didn't prove correct this generation thus far, so forgive me for being skeptical. We have even heard and seen the words "Only On" or "Exclusive" only to see that same game come out on another console 6 months later.
So I don't think it is that simple.
iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Of course it's Doomed, the 3DS has only been out a year and look at its numbers where as Vita is still lounging at 0 outside of Asia. Forget it's not out yet, it should still be doing better, No idea why Sony is bothering with it.
Of course it's not. It's not selling well in Japan and I doubt it'll sell well in the west right from the start but that's due to the high price. The video gaming market is highly (highly!) price sensitive and most consumers aren't willing to spend more than $200 on a portable gaming system. Once the price comes down sales will increase quite a bit.
The real problem Sony has to face with the Vita is Nintendo's ambition to move upmarket with the 3DS. Nintendo getting games like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Tekken is definitely a worrying trend for Sony, especially considering Iwata's comment about third parties getting more interested in the platform because of the good sales. If we break customers down into "core customers", "casual customers" (= those who only play some games like Mario Kart, GTA, Call of Duty but don't play regularly) and "distant customers" (the ones who bought a Wii or DS for non-traditional games like Brain Training, Wii Fit and Wii Sports) the PSP got a good chunk of the core gamers, a fair chunk of the casual players (due to GTA and people buying PSP's because it was cool) and almost none of the distant customers. While Nintendo seems to focus less on distant customers (because they are stupid) they intensified their efforts to increase their market share among the core and casual customers. They are directly competing with the PS Vita here, they had a one year head start and they are getting a lot more "core" games than they did during the DS era.
Luckily (for Sony) Nintendo is stupid enough not to go after the distant customers this time. If that was the case the 3DS would be selling gangbusters right now (it's selling well but nowhere near DS sales) and developers would probably focus completely on the 3DS.
Sony just needs to release a steady stream of games to keep most core customers on board and wait until 2014 when Nintendo will stop pushing the 3DS because of their next handheld console eating away development resources. That should be enough to sell more than 50 million Vita's.

You know why this is not even a debate?
There was once upon a time, a home console that had the highest price point ever and it was going against what at that time was called "an equal" HD twin. There was no superior game coming for that console compared to that twin, the price of the machine was higher and there was no potential 10M franchise announced for it and people were calling it DOOMED.
A couple of years later, the machine still doesn´t have an exclusive game that sold 10M units, but the console has sold 60M units and, according to VGC it was the best selling console of 2011. Can you guess what console I am talking about?
The vita is not going against the 3ds, Vitas main goal is to outsell the PSP, and if that goal is reached the gap between the Vita and 3DS will be smaller then what they did with the PSP, and that is the main goal for Sony. There are no 10M sellers on the horizon but guess what, Sony consoles don´t sell on GT or Uncharted, they sell because they present the variety that keeps consumers happy.
That is the reason why PSP failed (from a consumer perspective), it didn´t present the normal variety/quality that Sony platforms have and that is the main reason why it didn´t sell well in Europe and America, and guess what, it still managed 70M sold. You can see that this will not happen with the Vita, just from the launch line-up.

There is a difference between skepticism and making an assumption based on it. Until we have confirmation, I don't see any compelling reason why we shouldn't think of Monster Hunter 4 as a 3DS exclusive.

No way! Vita has removable internal memory. That's advanceder.
