There was once upon a time, a home console that had the highest price point ever and it was going against what at that time was called "an equal" HD twin. There was no superior game coming for that console compared to that twin, the price of the machine was higher and there was no potential 10M franchise announced for it and people were calling it DOOMED. A couple of years later, the machine still doesn´t have an exclusive game that sold 10M units, but the console has sold 60M units and, according to VGC it was the best selling console of 2011. Can you guess what console I am talking about? The vita is not going against the 3ds, Vitas main goal is to outsell the PSP, and if that goal is reached the gap between the Vita and 3DS will be smaller then what they did with the PSP, and that is the main goal for Sony. There are no 10M sellers on the horizon but guess what, Sony consoles don´t sell on GT or Uncharted, they sell because they present the variety that keeps consumers happy. That is the reason why PSP failed (from a consumer perspective), it didn´t present the normal variety/quality that Sony platforms have and that is the main reason why it didn´t sell well in Europe and America, and guess what, it still managed 70M sold. You can see that this will not happen with the Vita, just from the launch line-up. |
I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison, where the PS3 came off the back of the most successful console ever, the PSVita is coming off the back of a less-than amazing console, in a more competitive market where capturing the publics attention is far more difficult.
