Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo FYQ3 Financials - Profits, Wii 5.61, 3DS 8.36, all HW Forecasts Lowered

Are they selling the 3DS at a loss? If so that would be an adequate explanation as to why they'd forecast a loss when their sales are that strong.

Why do analysts and the media in general always blame Nintendo's slow down on social gaming ect. Completely ignoring that 5/6 year old HD HW are having their best years, so no, social gaming clearly isn't having an affect on home consoles, it's just Wii experiencing the usual sales curve.

That doesnt explain the weak 3DS performance and the inevitable PSVita's poor sales performance

People on this forum really need to start to accept that other styles of gaming... mobile phones, pads and yes social gaming ARE going to have a massive impact on consoles.... particularly dedicated handhelds.

And now a raft of people will come and tell me that I am wrong... again.

Lets just wait and see how this year pans out shall we.

In the end, it honestly just comes down to games.

Nintendo's lack of strength overall signals to me Nintendo's incompetence with its newer games, rather than apple making them become obsolete. I'm not dissing games like 3D Land or Mario Kart 7, but they simply won't save the system. 3D Land will never be a hit on the level of Super Mario Brothers, and Mario Kart can't turn things around on its own like that, as I don't believe it has ever done so. Remakes like of old games isn't going to save them either (so why do they make them? Even OoT probably should have waited until the system was in a better place..it isn't the type of game to save a system either. Use your resources on something that brings in the proper cashflow first that you need to survive).

Overall, I think the blunt way of saying it is that they really just need to start making better games..then they will continue to be relevant inspite of whatever apple does. I'd like to see Nintendo release a Super Mario Brothers for the 3DS and Wii U so that they can showcase this. Honestly, these types of games are a priority. Nintendo's lack of making them is beyond insane.

These are shipped numbers?

and VGchartz data goes by consumer/retail sales, right? Is the 3DS really that over-tracked, or am I misunderstanding something here?

15m shipped and 14,5m sold to end of december sounds reasonable to me.

@kowenicki:

Yes,i know this is bad but the truth they turn out a profit is above my expectation.

I know they have tough road ahead but at least 3ds is picking up now,If  WiiU has strong and sucessful lauch, may be the situation will be better.

really?

They sold that 500k in the 7 days following this shipment number according to VGC.  So they had 7 days supply for the planet, I think we would have heard about issues and shortgages all over the place if that were true.

Nah, its too high on here

needs a good 750k to 1m adjustment down.

uhhh....At what intervals do nintendo ship 3ds's? Why couldn't they have a next shipment within those seven days? (This whole ship/sold thing is the most stupidest shit I swear)

It doesnt alter the fact that on the 1st January there was only 500k 3DS on shelves, in stores, in warehouse and on the road apparently.  The 1st week in January is a massive shopping event, there would have been shortages and reports of sold out. No question.

You can think it is stupid shit all you want but its also relevant.

6 days supply is the lowest we have ever had in the shipped v sold tally on this site and cant be right.

Dude, how can retailers report shortages if they had  a 7 day supply. They could have had new shipments on 1st Jan for all we know.

"Hasn't taken sufficient measures to combat the currency problem"

What precisely can they do? Short of lobbying the Japanese government to do something about it (which they have been trying to do to no avail).

The problem with the Yen is too much savings. Supposedly upwards of $300 billion in this country is kept in cash (what we in America would call "stuffed under a mattress"). If the Japanese incentivized spending better, the problem would go away, but there is little Nintendo could do short of jacking up prices across the board abroad, which would just lead to reduced revenue anyway (though they could get more profit per unit, so if they decreased production volume...)

The point is it's very hard to legitimately criticize Nintendo's position vis-a-vis the Yen ("legitimately" meaning, criticize with a workable solution in mind).

Perhaps they should just move all their Japanese operations except domestic distribution out of the country, but then that would create huge HR problems...

Whilst I agree with you... you saying "to no avail" is wrong.  The Japanes have intervened on their currency massively and on a number of occasions in the last year or so.  There is not only nothing more Nintendo can do, there is nothing more the Japanese government can do.

It is equally attributable to the weakness of the Euro and Dollar as it is to the strength of the Yen.  It has improved a little in recent days so there is some light there.

And yes... many Japanese manufacturers are basing more and more of their operations abroad.

The Yen continues to be a massive problem though as you will see when Sony release their numbers next week and make these Nintendo numbers look great.

heh, i thought i worded that sentence poorly. I meant that the Japanese efforts have been to little avail, not the efforts of Japanese companies to get Japan to try to do something

The dollar i think could see a turnaround in a couple of years (barring any major catastrophes), since the economic fundamentals in America seem to be lining up, but the Euro is going to be a mess for some time to come, unless Europe acts quickly (odd for me to say that, of course, as the leftist in me is quite against austerity)

Or the fairy dust and scotch tape holding the Japanese system together could come apart and drag the Yen down, but that would just be horrible for everyone

I give up... they didnt have 7 days supply.  there was POTEBTIALLY seven days supply in the chain, between warehouses, online retialers, store shelves, in trucks.

I can easily use your own argument against you, what if that final shipment of say 200k 3DS didnt leave the factory until dec 29th? then how much supply is there?

Those kind of tight margins wont work... its overtracked.

Oh boy.....During that quarter their were reports of mass sellouts in certain regions http://www.computerandvideogames.com/328526/3ds-selling-out-at-uk-retailers/

So there were signs of struggles to meet demand in certain regions during the quarter, and of courses there would be cases of sells-outs at a few individual retailers at varying times around the world that wont make headlines. Like mines for instance but they got resupplied lil afterwards.

And why do you keep repeating the bolded. It does not matter where the goods are in the chain as long as the retailers has access to it. Also, if they had a '7 days' supply on the 31st Dec and a new shipment was made 1st of Jan It would make this all irrelevant. This is why I asked the first question. and if thats the case it can even be undertracked.

There is no evidence here that the 3ds is overtracked dude, relax.

The 3DS forecast has needed revising down since its abysmal Q1 showing. I don't think it's any reflection on current sales levels.

A shrewd observation. Do you think it was an effort to make the missed Q1 targets seem less painful by lowering the forecast in increments over the rest of the fiscal year (rather than dragging the numbers all the way down all at once), or that they honestly thought they could make it back up later?

Not good for Nintendo... 3DS helped a lot but I thing Wii U is more than necessary now.

660k Wii's vs 2.07M 360's and Wii is overtracked? Unless I'm missing something isn't a console with under 1M units on shelves usually undertracked?
