they do have achievements in place like you said but the while point in once they become displayed and become bragging rights people attach false value to them and it really stifles the game in the end. Say you achieve some super hard achievement, your still doing something you are told to do, there's no creativity or freedom in creating your own achievements because you only get "rewarded" for what the devd put in.

I realize there is this sentiment that nintendo should appeal to the hardcore more around here but then they lose their appeal which is fun and freedom. Like I've said, leave that bullshit on "hardcore" systems.

You obviously dont know how it feels to unlock achievements or trophies.....I had that same mentality before but now I have grown to love this feature and would love to get some kind of rewards for unlocking them

The reason why Nintendo didn't implement a trophy/achievement feature in the Wii or DS is because neither platform relied heavily upon an online service that allowed everyone on the "Nintendo Network" to see what others were playing or communicate freely with random players.

Offhand, I'd say it was in the interest of privacy and security, given the fact that Nintendo platforms are first and foremost, family oriented or children oriented platforms. This explains the Friend Codes, which make it impossible to play with or communicate with complete random strangers online.

Safer? Yes. Conducive to finding random new people to game with? No.

We'll see how that changes with the Wii-U. If Friend Codes are still in effect, maybe not as much as some would like.

Anyway, there's little point in having an achievement system if you and the people with whom you share Friend Codes with are the only ones who can see your gaming exploits.

Personally, I find them to be a little invasive, but in a Facebook/Twitter world, people voluntarily offer just about everything about themselves for the entire world to see anyway, gaming habits are hardly private information.

What games you've been playing and how much you've been playing and putting that information out for everyone to see is really what game scores are about. They are more of an indicator of how much a gamer plays and less of how proficient they are at picking up Achievements/Trophies.

In their current format achievements offer little value ...

I could see some value if Nintendo made an Animal Crossing like game that was built into the system (probably using Miis) and achievements in games unlocked features in this game. While this wouldn't be too interesting on day one, as you played more games and explored this world further it would start to represent your experiences with your system.

Now that is what I would expect from MS or Sony on the next platform. Great idea, kinda  of like how phantasy star had a room you could order your trophies or rewards.  Have areas's where you could show off your most proud achievements and could also transfer over to your bio.

Achievements are lame. Finishing the game is the achievement. I really dont why people care for these trophy-thingies.

See above post. Once it's on Wii U, liked rumored, I'm sure you will change your mind on achievements/trophies.

ALso, is it lame because Nintendo don't have it?  I see this a lot when people nock it because they don't got it.

This has nothing to do with Nintendo. I have a PS3, it has trophies, i dont care about them, they are completely arbitrary to me. I am sure Wii U will have it, since Nintendo looks to be doing everything wrong with the Wii U, destroying the success of the Wii. The Wii U controller is the stupidest thing I have ever seen, Wii U is essentially reduced to an enormous DS with better graphics, why anyone thinks a big DS is innovative in 2012 is beyond me. But beside the point, achievements are lame and is part of the bad developments in gaming. Whatever happened to a simple high score table?

Well I don't understand if you ignore the achievements, why is it so bad?  There is high score tables. For instance, I got 1.74 K/D in COD MW3. There are lots of tables. You act like they ruined and destroyed other parts of the game, I got some breaking news, They didn't.

the thing is even if some of you people don't care about achievements, there are still plenty of people who like them. If you don't like them just ignore them, they don't affect gameplay in any way so why shouldn't nintendo add them to their consoles. Personally I liked the xbox achievments, but I don't really care for steam or ps3 achievments. I just like the total score I earn for my profile rather than each individual hate.

Achievments are basically the same thing as all those useless unlockable things nintendo stuffs their games with or like the high score systems a lot of classic games had. Its just a number or a useless trophy, or artwork, but at the same time its satisfying earning them for some people, so why not include them.

The difference is that a high score is exactly that, the highest score. An achievement is something everyone can get, filling certain criteria. But there can be only one high score holder.
¨
So the achievements are no measurement of skill, they just show you managed to do exactly the same thing as thousands of other players. Pointless.

achievements aren't that great....besides Nintendo said they don't want to add achievements since it makes you progress through the game in an unnatural way or something.....

And I believe them, there pretty smart when it comes to game design its like there strongest point.

Strong and passionate, I tend to be misunderstood, sometimes even feared. I don't want to fight, I don't want to cause trouble, all I ask is a little love, and a little peace. If I don't get what I want, I get angry, and throw barrels and flaming oil at whatever's stopping me. What Video Game Character Are You?

I don't mind achievements, but I do think they're completely pointless and appeal to people not like me, but rather those who like to grind at warcraft so they can brag about putting 3400 hours into a game.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
