If you guys say so. Might wanna look into creative writing classes or something, because any writer will tell you the presentation of that plot was lackluster. Sometimes it's not a matter of opinion, this is one of those cases.

i only finished Chapter one, but i can also tell how POORLY the script was written. i mean, it was so illogical of Serah saying that she has some feeling that she can trust Noel, but in in the next 3 Scenes, she distrusts him, and then, all of a sudden, she says sorry for it, and goes timetravelling. And a scene later, they act like the best pal's - ignoring the fact that theyve just met.

i like the game so far, but square really did poorly with the writing - at least at the very beginning.

PS@EVERYONE: i think this is a sensitive topic to discuss, so why dont we focus on other points of the game? i think the Semirandom battles, and the fact that you have to focus on a certain role for your chars at the beginning are nice tactical touches. =]

It's not really a discussion, there is nothing to discuss , we all agreed on that.

One thing ,I'm really glad that they didn't use the random battles, I don't like it , it is so last generation :p

... But... but... nerdrage over an encounter 2 steps after the last feels so nostalgic. QQ

Exactly , how are you supposed to explore the dam' world like that xD

If anyone wants to know more about proper narrative techniques, look no farther than Final Fantasy IV: the complete Collection. I reviewed that last year as one of my first reviews for the site, and I think the high score I gave it is well deserved. (then again, I wanted to give it higher because it was the first time I'd ever played Final Fantasy IV).

The review is here in case anyone wants to see: http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/review/47198/dissidia-012-duodecim-final-fantasy/

Anyway, in Final Fantasy IV, the characters are personified not just through the dialogue boxes, but also their gameplay styles. One way Final Fantasy XIII-2 fails is that Serah is a schoolteacher but manages to kick copious amounts of ass...which makes no sense. Her in battle and out-of battle persona are completely different and do not mix at all. Edward the Bard from final Fantasy IV is purely a support character who is a coward. While back then it would have been easy to just tell us "dude's a coward", they took it two steps farther by having his entire arc being about proving he's not a coward to the woman he loves. His cowardice is also reflected in his gameplay style, having a move right there in his list that makes him run and hide. The character is personified not just through the plot but through the gameplay as well (and I'm not even going to get into the other characters, almost all of which are deeper and more interesting than basically any other game character ever.) Instead we have a character that does things for seemingly no reason at all, with weak motivations and a complete disconnect from even herself one moment to the next.

with the amount of money they spent on this AND FFXIII, there's no reason they couldn't hire someone to write a better story or at least better or more believeable character interactions. It's not hard people, you don't need an encyclopedia of exposition to get a point across, it's not effective or engaging at all.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Final Fantasy IV, most everyone dies, or appear to die. The only on who actually dies is tellah. This is generally considered a bad plot device. (they did use this in FF13 with sahz) Much like Amnesia this series, has used repeatedly atleast 5,6,7,8,9 (sorta), 13 (fang).

Now I'm not saying I think FF13-2 is a literary masterpiece or whatever.  I find, most every final fantasy in existance, has multiple wtf moments for me, this is no exception.

Also not saying that FF13-2 isn't a worse offender than X game. Just stating that FF normally has

Also characters that shouldn't do battle well come to mind. Cait Stith, Quina, Tidus, Wakka, Rinoa, Lenna, Vaan, Penelo. Comes to mind as the more glaring people. It's not unique to this, game, JRPG's, WRPG's for that matter.  Should they find a better device? Probably.

This thread is getting to hot and heavy.

bye thread.

I love WTF moments. Star Ocean 3 has one of the best "WTFs!" ever.

Now that you mentioned an actual point , I got to say the animations in battle were handled nicely to reflect that , when Noel is done attacking he does that cool acrobatic jump , makes him looks like a well experienced fighter , Sarah on the other hand does an ordinary and boring jump backward , gives you the impression that she is a newbie , Sarah also say something like "please work" during the battle when you use a strong magic like Firga, seems like she always uncertain of her powers, these small touches most people won't pay attention to , but I like them a lot, However, I agree that Sarah thing could have been handled better but the question is how , we don't want to end up with useless or too weak main character in order to make her realistic. like Tidus in FF X, grabbed a sword and just started to swing with it .

The NPCs are well done too, they talk about their personal things and feelings , how the rain feels different now they are on Pulse . the whole datalog criticism is over exaggerated , it is only a method to catch up, that has some, but few, explanation.

BTW , I believe you mean this link : http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/review/49135/final-fantasy-iv-the-complete-collection/

You can get the missing fragment in New Bodhum when you unlock Mog's first ability. Some of Bresha Ruins fragments require you to visit different timelines later in the game.
