The gun to the head is by far the most humane way of killing them, but was blown out of proportion in the video.

Some of the stuff is indeed cruel, and horrific. But as HS said, I think these kinds of things are only from the most egregious farms, and certainly not the norm.

It is. I live in a huge farming area - tons of cows, pigs, ect. I rarely see animals that aren't free range. Heck, about 1/2 of a mile from the town I live in has probably 200 head of cattle in a huge 500 acre field, letting them graze on leftover corn from the harvest.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

These are isolated instances yes, but look at the big picture here.

Take chickens, how many chicken farms do you think there are?

Now think on a daily life in ones city, just your city, how many Chickens are eaten every day?

Like chicken nuggets, Chicken Legs, Chicken Breasts, eggs for breakfast, I talking about Fast Food, Restaurants, Food Markets, Cafeterias, Your own kitchen.

Just think how many chickens are cooked and prepped daily, that's allot of chickens, that's ALLOT of F'en CHICKENS.

Now just think how they have to hatch these chickens, pump the up with steroids, get them big quicker, and then kill them humanely.

I don't know if it can be done with the 'Supply and Demand', I mean our whole lives - daily - revolve around farms, so much so that they have to pump things into animals to make them grow bigger, faster.  Then you eat it, and wonder why your Son is getting a mustache faster then you did at his age, or why your daughters breasts are already huge for her age.

It will not change unless A) you buy organic. B) Have your own farm. C) Vegan.

FTR, after watching the video, a thought crossed my mind about hunting these people down and giving them a taste of what they do.

I couldn't even watch the whole thing.

Having been on farms and ranches before, as well as slaughter houses, either things are done drastically different here in Alberta or this video is propaganda involving clips from the worst 0.1% of facilities ...

Personally, I'm betting on propaganda

while yes, this is most certainly propaganda, this still happens.

though not as often as they would like us to believe.

any way, what we can do to solve this problem and eliminate it, is as consumers vote with your wallet.

if a practices actions that you disagree with, simply dont buy from there. these companies will self regulate, if people choose not to buy from them.

consumer reporters, and the consumers themselves is all we need.

edit: and by vote with you wallet, i dont mean choose a vegan diet like this hippy video said to do, i meant choose meat companies that dont do this stuff (read: most of them)

I don't doubt that it happens, but I believe they tend to be in the vast minority of facilities ...

Beyond the obvious (that most people would have difficulty acting in such a cruel way), it is simply bad business to mistreat animals that you're going to eat. Between the impact on quality/taste of the meat, the risk of being shut down for health/safety reasons, facing fines/charges under animal cruelty laws, and large buyers refusing to do business with you for PR reasons, the risks to your business far outweigh any potential returns from using these strategies.

It may sound like an odd "defence" but the reason why they use the impact-hammer/spike to the heads of cows is that it kills them instantaneously which is important because meat from an animal that is stressed when it dies is tough and doesn’t taste good. While you probably wouldn't know why it tasted "off" if you ate beef, pork or chicken from one of these cruel facilities you would probably think that it had gone bad.

I think I watched them make bolgna on modern marvels. Disgusting! But what are you gonna do? Still eat it

Yeah, but it certainly makes one think. I hope it's not like this over here in Iceland!

I actually did not watch the video, but I am sure it is both horrible and gross. I am also sure that it is probably the same way everywhere. The only difference is that America has a million Health regulations.

Regulations? Yes. Enforcement? Not so much.  Even if there is a fine levied, the company execs can pool their pocket change to pay it off and laugh at the suckers.. I mean the American people.

Good ol' propaganda.

My uncles cows eat better than I do (molasses, grain, and corn) and are killed instantly with that pneumatic gun thing they showed, the same thing used in No County for Old Men.

This stuff happens and when big companies find out they drop them. Peta tried to make KFC look bad a few years back and posted a video like this. KFC dropped the slaughter house and the story ended.

The video is made by Mercy for Animals, you think they are going to cover a humane slaughter house?

No Regulations? Good! The less that I have to pay for meat.

Sensationalistic garbage.

Basically, groups like this find the most despicable, disgusting, horrifying things they can and try to pass it off as the norm when it happens in less than 1% of instances. I watched this a few weeks back and couldn't stop facepalming. I've worked in slaughterhouses, I've seen what goes on with cows and pigs and chickens, and while it certainly isn't pretty, it's not the barbaric inhumane things that groups like this would have you believe.

In other news: nature is cruel, who knew?!

Seriously, slitting of the throat is still one of the most humane ways to kill something, next to a bullet to the brain, and humans are the only carnivores who give a damn about their prey, and the only ones who have even the remotest bit of remorse over it. Trust me, what a lion does to a gazelle is infinitely worse than anything you'll find here.

Nothing to see here folks, move on.
