though not as often as they would like us to believe. any way, what we can do to solve this problem and eliminate it, is as consumers vote with your wallet. if a practices actions that you disagree with, simply dont buy from there. these companies will self regulate, if people choose not to buy from them. consumer reporters, and the consumers themselves is all we need. edit: and by vote with you wallet, i dont mean choose a vegan diet like this hippy video said to do, i meant choose meat companies that dont do this stuff (read: most of them) |
I don't doubt that it happens, but I believe they tend to be in the vast minority of facilities ...
Beyond the obvious (that most people would have difficulty acting in such a cruel way), it is simply bad business to mistreat animals that you're going to eat. Between the impact on quality/taste of the meat, the risk of being shut down for health/safety reasons, facing fines/charges under animal cruelty laws, and large buyers refusing to do business with you for PR reasons, the risks to your business far outweigh any potential returns from using these strategies.
It may sound like an odd "defence" but the reason why they use the impact-hammer/spike to the heads of cows is that it kills them instantaneously which is important because meat from an animal that is stressed when it dies is tough and doesn’t taste good. While you probably wouldn't know why it tasted "off" if you ate beef, pork or chicken from one of these cruel facilities you would probably think that it had gone bad.
