Forums - Nintendo - Is there any genre's that WiiU cannot dominate?

Dominate? I think it will significantly worse than the Wii on near all accounts and talking about domination already seems far-fetched to me. Didn't people say the exact same thing about the PS3 before it launched?

People said the Wii and DS would fail and look what happened. Some people say the Wii U will fail and some say it will be a success. So there is nothing wrong with saying that the Wii U will dominate or fail. People are free to think what they want so I see nothing wrong in this OP.

It might do RTS better than current consoles but it stil wont match up against the PC. Considering RTS games have a big focus on multiplayer and competition, the controls needs to be able to allow for that.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

I also don;t see Nintendo releasing a mouse peripheral ever.

I must say though, the Wii U controller has a lot of potential, and seems to be able to do many things and be adaptable to many genres in a unique way. I just hope the developers are able to make good use of it.

From quite a few perspectives, this thread needs to be suppressed

1. While the potential is there for Wii U to have a comprehensive advantage over other platforms from an input perspective, between the Wii Remote which has proven advantageous in certain realms, and the tablet controller which has the potential to prove advantageous in other realms, these matters come down to software support. This hinges upon the notion that Nintendo will somehow escape the mass third-party conspiracy that has existed against them ever since Nintendo got viable competitors. It remains to be seen even if third parties will bother integrating Wii U into the multiplat loop, let alone if they will do any effort of optimization thereat.

2. Speculation that Wii U is weaker than or only as strong as PS3 or 360 runs counter to knowledge that we possess, and shall henceforth be branded as FUD and not accepted in discussion. Therefore you must be on alert

3. lol at people who use the term "serious gaming." Get over yourselves, now.

What does the PC have that can’t be added to the touch screen?  If it is going to have great online as they are saying why can’t it handle a PC RTS?

Well, of course they're free to say or think whatever they like but so am I.

Just lending my two cents, is all.

It will dominate the huge awkward controller genre for sure!

Seriously though we don't even know its capabilities yet, so I would hold off before declaring domination.

What a silly post. This console isn't even going to come out for another year or two. It is already (before it even realeases) far outdated.. By the time it hits store shelves the tech will be an Antique. As for what genere it won't dominate... Sports games.. Sony/M$ franchises/FPS/any game that adults or teens take seriously. Gamers don't play Nintendo games to have a serious immersive experience.. They play it to have fun and be silly. This perception will not change, if anything Nintendo will get even more of a "kiddy" repuation due to this silly (and slightly ridiculous) tablet controller and relying on the Wii motes for extra controllers. With hardware that is 4 to 6 years behind the competition not to mention how far behind PC gaming they will be. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Isn't it funny that almost NO ONE, gaming publications such as GameInformer or any other respectable gaming site looks at the WiiU as a next gen console... It will be getting ports from the 360 and PS3 and even those aren't going to release till long after the PS/360 versions of the same game releases. This console is DoA. Point to the success of the NES... I point to the Gamecube.. Poin to the success of the Wii... I put to the WiiU. /thread.

Your so cool, mature and serious… and you know a lot as well. good for you!

anything online-centric. an online platform like xbl doesn't get built overnight. you and see a significant difference between xlb and psn due to MS's head start and nintendo is even further back on psn then psn to xbl. their service will improve but it will not dominate.

Im not sure why you mentioning this ? I didnt address online functionality at all and i did not say the wii u cant handle a PC RTS.

Anyways back to the controls....I think its too early to give an informed opinion. We first have to see how the touch controls will be adapted to RTS gameplay.

But as it stands now and in my understanding of how touch controls will work, the controls wont match up to pc mouse and keyboard controls. Take for example the usual RTS control scheme for a game like age of empires or warcraft. Left click is used to select one unit or u can drag to select a range of units. This action is almost instantaneous or as fast as the user does it. Issuing a move command or attack command can very quickly be done with the right click. Again this standard PC RTS control scheme is very quick, precise and responsive. And in competitve type RTS games the speed at which you can do these things and the precision at which you can do this basic actions is paramount to your success. For example a dota game, when one hero is running away from another and you need to quickly navigate the bushes, which are very narrow pathways. Precision, accuracy and speed is needed here.

At this point in time i dont see how touch controls can accomodate this to the same level the mouse can. Selecting a unit will be quick, no problems here, but from my experience with RTS, some other gesture needs to be done to do other things. Like to select multiple units the player might need to touch and hold. this touch and hold motion is commonly used in touch games at the moment and just in general on touch interfaces to add variety. But that extra second or so is time consuming. There will always be that limitation of touch controls in that one touch only has one function at a given time and in order to change that function some other gesture needs to be performed to change it which in turn takes times. Whereas a mouse has instant access to three buttones and the movement of the mouse itself at all times which allows for instand access to more than one type of command.

I was more addressing the statement of Wii U being as good as PC when it comes to RTS which is what was being implied by Joelcool7, obviously the chances of Wii U players playing on the same platform of PC players ina multiplayer game are slim. Wii U players playing amongst themselves there wont be any problems, but this doesnt mean its as good as mouse and keyboard.

But again im limited by my experiences with touch controls...if they can come up with a better way to do it then il reaccess my opinion.
