What does the PC have that can’t be added to the touch screen? If it is going to have great online as they are saying why can’t it handle a PC RTS? |
Im not sure why you mentioning this ? I didnt address online functionality at all and i did not say the wii u cant handle a PC RTS.
Anyways back to the controls....I think its too early to give an informed opinion. We first have to see how the touch controls will be adapted to RTS gameplay.
But as it stands now and in my understanding of how touch controls will work, the controls wont match up to pc mouse and keyboard controls. Take for example the usual RTS control scheme for a game like age of empires or warcraft. Left click is used to select one unit or u can drag to select a range of units. This action is almost instantaneous or as fast as the user does it. Issuing a move command or attack command can very quickly be done with the right click. Again this standard PC RTS control scheme is very quick, precise and responsive. And in competitve type RTS games the speed at which you can do these things and the precision at which you can do this basic actions is paramount to your success. For example a dota game, when one hero is running away from another and you need to quickly navigate the bushes, which are very narrow pathways. Precision, accuracy and speed is needed here.
At this point in time i dont see how touch controls can accomodate this to the same level the mouse can. Selecting a unit will be quick, no problems here, but from my experience with RTS, some other gesture needs to be done to do other things. Like to select multiple units the player might need to touch and hold. this touch and hold motion is commonly used in touch games at the moment and just in general on touch interfaces to add variety. But that extra second or so is time consuming. There will always be that limitation of touch controls in that one touch only has one function at a given time and in order to change that function some other gesture needs to be performed to change it which in turn takes times. Whereas a mouse has instant access to three buttones and the movement of the mouse itself at all times which allows for instand access to more than one type of command.
I was more addressing the statement of Wii U being as good as PC when it comes to RTS which is what was being implied by Joelcool7, obviously the chances of Wii U players playing on the same platform of PC players ina multiplayer game are slim. Wii U players playing amongst themselves there wont be any problems, but this doesnt mean its as good as mouse and keyboard.
But again im limited by my experiences with touch controls...if they can come up with a better way to do it then il reaccess my opinion.
