Would the world be better off if religion was out of the equation? Offcourse.

Religions disputes have been the cause of many wars and campaigns. The crusades, Spanish inquisition.......Israel vs every country that borders them.

Hell in the middle east you will be killed if you "troll" Islam in public. Now thats a fanboy!

And replaced with what?  You would suggest that society be totally tempered and generate its values out of a consumerist driven economy where corporations pander to every base desire, and the only thing that informs the process is the base wants of individuals?  In short, throw out religion and replace it with the Home Shopping Network?

Historically, you have seen for centuries banking interests and public debt funding wars.  To ignore these elements is to be short-sighted and not be able to see an effective solution to problems.

Its easy to poke holes but harder to come up with a acceptable alternative. Id take home shopping network over religious inspired genocides any day.

Well said :)

Although, I still believe that religion is important as a way of teaching moral values to children. It's one of the main pillars of a civilised society imo

No, it's called common sense and parenting, it's as easy as teaching your children to not break the law and tell them to always use a fucking condom so you don't have to raise your grand kids in their place, which too many parents don't do these days which in turn come the spoiled pussies which are so many of the children these days.

Those parents that don't teach their children to not break laws and wear condoms are likely not religious though - the spoiled kids come from the "poor" families living off the government in their council houses

you either live in a very different world than me or you haven't been alive long enough to see how fucked up people can be even if they are religious or have a good amount of wealth.

Nobody with your ideals could be considered great. Judging from this thread, he has shown more respect, love and honesty to a fellow man than you and sapphi probably did in your entire hateful lifes. He seems, by far, (and im sure lots of atheists would agree with me) a billion times more tolerant person than you could ever dream of. Hes certainly better than you and sapphi snake in that regard

So, by the opinion of someone who's outed himself as a rather devout follower of god (you), I'm a bad person because not only do I not believe in god, but I feel that the very belief is irrational.  Why does that not surprise me?  does it have something to do with "thou shalt not worship false gods before me"?  does the idea that I reject your fantasy and substitute my own reality offend you?  Yes, yes it does.  I'm sorry if I've upset you or any other religious people here, but frankly, I have a problem with what I call "aggressive ignorance".

I could elaborate, but I'm kinda busy because I'm off to donate blood.  Oh, and later this week I'm giving most of my stuff to the salvation army and volunteering to help in a homeless shelter.  Yep, I'm such a horrible person with horrible ideals.  Great judge of character your god is.

I couldn't give 2 shits if you think my belief is irrational or not. What pisses me off is your hypocrisy arrogance and intolerance. How you act all mighty and superior towards anyone who is like padib, how you call him intolerant when you clearly despise everything religious, how you call him homophobic, when anyone can clearly see HE does not hate queers. Funny how you immediately jumped on accusations bandwagon to expose my "religious evilness" and how horrible my God is (even though i never used that word, but whatever works for ya), but it ain't gonna work on me. Im not like padib, i wouldn't spend 5 seconds justifying my faith to a person like you

If you dont believe in something, than why do you show such hatred towards the thing you dont believe than? Also just because he said something, doesnt mean that "god" said that. His response is of his own will, not from a divine origin.

Also bragging about something like donating blood defeats the purpose of doing that thing if you ask me ;x. You shouldnt be bragging about stuff like that at all...

I don't show hatred towards god, I was showing his hypocrisy.

I am not donating blood, I am not doing any volunteer work, but he didn't know that.  (I'm only not doing the above because I can't, not because I don't want to.) The point of the argument was to show how stupid it was to assume I was a horrible, selfish, judgemental, closemined, ignorant person simply because of my (justified) hatred towards ONE thing.  well, two.  I hate Final Fantasy XIII as well, but that's a much less powerful hatred.  The point is: I'm a great person, they just like to see me as a monster because I think religion is a horrible, ignorant waste of time, and I have no qualms about saying so rather than playing politically correct and censoring my words.

if you don't care, then why are you STILL arguing with me about it?  if you didn't care, you'd be happy to sit back and ignore this thread.  The fact is, you DO care, because my assertion that following religion is a willful act of ignorance (Faith is belief without proof) makes your world view feel threatened and you feel the need to act out aggressively.

I do not despise EVERYTHING religious, just the bad or stupid parts. you know, like that whole "The world is 6000 years old, evolution is a myth, dinosaurs aren't real, and praying is the path to healing" BS.  I've said multiple times that the non-aggressive, non-judgemental religious people are GREAT!  many of my best friends are religious, and one of which has actually been studying to become an ordained preist.  The ones who chose to use god as a reason to help others and be non-judgemental, and understand that Religion and Science are not mutually exclusive, those are the ones I like.  While they are the majority, there's more than enough people like you and padib that I see daily to remind me why I loathe religion so much.  Padib at least is trying to be more rational about yet, yet he still adheres to his ideals which consist of sexism and various other barbaric judgemental beliefs.

And back to the topic at hand: THAT is why religion should have no place in this world except for the hearts of those who believe.  If you believe in god, good for you, but keep that shit to yourself.  As I've said DOZENS of times, the moment someone uses god or religion to judge others, act superior, or interfere in science, that's when I have a problem.  You, sir, are exhibit A.

I hope you don't hate it too...I hate it when people hate things :P  Ideally, I'd rather not hate things, but some things are just so bad you gotta hate it.

Think about it this way padib.
What if the Bible actually wrote it the opposite way we now know it. What if the sin was being hetero?
I know it's hard for you to put yourself in someone else's shoes about this subject, but please try it for just a moment.

<...>

@bolded. It will be my great delight. I never ask someone to do something I wouldn't myself be willing to do.

Regarding italics, if the bible stated that being heterosexual was a sin, I would stop being a Christian immediately. It is contrary to every fibre of reason and conviction I have irrespective of scripture. To assure you, there are areas in the bible I struggle with very much so. Thankfully, they aren't as blatant as "flee from heterosexuality, or any form of sexuality whatsoever".

In other words, I can understand why people who, with their convictions of life telling them homosexuality is good, were quick to throw the bible out. I can understand that position since, if I were in their shoes, I would have done the same.

Excellent question.

Thank you padib.

I see now that your conviction against homosexuality is Biblical reference and nothing personal. I can appreciate that. You would do well to let people know that in the future.

To tell you the unmasked truth, I believe I am biologically bisexual. I have had homosexual relations in the past, and have enjoyed them all. I still fantasize on them.

Having said that, given my dedication to my convictions, I have worked to focus my efforts on the heterosexual side of my desires.

Though you may be very saddened by that, I hope you understand that is my personal choice, and in a world where people are free to choose  and follow where their heart leads them, I know you respect my decision if at least out of respect for the disposition of my heart.

added: If it helps alleviate the burden of saddness, I also have incestuous tendencies that I keep in check.

Oh shit, padibs got some skeletons in the closet! I would probably do what you are doing if I was bi. I'd focus on hetero, it's just easier with kids and making sure you have the correct balance of masculine and feminine influences on those kids (Not that homo couples can't, but it's just easier).

Sorry to butt in here xD

Padib you are a great guy! You are not perfect, but being able to publicly apologize for your behaviour is humbling and a sign of a decent and big hearted person! Don`t you forget that.

Only half right.  Yes it's humbling and noble to admit mistakes and accept defeat, but he's not a great guy.  Nobody with his ideals could be considered great in this day and age.

Me, an Atheist, and my friend sat next to me, a Theist, disagree.

It's funny how "Dislikes religion" automatically means "Hatefilled, horrible, immoral person" in the eyes of the truly devout.  I don't need false gods to tell me to be nice to others.  in fact, most people I know say I'm one of the nicest people they know.  I just have low tolerance for certain behaviours: pushing religion is one of them.

Runa, when I read this, I thought you were telling the truth. Throughout this thread what I never took the time to properly think through is revealing itself ever more true to me, that areligious folk can and most probably are in many cases giving and selfless people. The first reality check in this thread for me was Rol's first counterpoint to one of my posts. It was a sort of a wake-up call. Don't think for a second that this thread didn't shake the grounds of much of my frame of mind. It very much did, and has been changing me more than I ever expected. For the record, I don't believe you're a bad person because you don't believe in God, if that helps at all. At first what threw me off was your complete aggressiveness against the viewpoint I come from, and it made me think you were a bad person. But I shouldn't even let peoples' behaviors lead me to think he or she is bad, we can all behave improperly and I have shown my own weaknesses in this thread.

@Player1x3, as much as your support warms my heart, this is the honest truth, I urge you not to label people in such ways -> "Nobody with your ideals could be considered great." It doesn't paint a good picture on believers, nor does it paint the proper one.  Romans 2:14-16

Don't be too disappointed, I'm still making a huge deposit to the salvation army, I just can't volunteer at a homeless shelter because there are none for over 100 miles, and I can't donate blood beause I've had too much gay sex in my life.  It's a curse, I know.
