ouch. that was unexpected.
Unfortunately, I haven´t played Skyrim yet, but IMO, from what people are reporting, there should be absolutely no way a multiplatform should be GOTY contender and have a broken version of the game, regardless of what hardware it is.
Just like Batflefield 3 should not be the best graphical game because the PC version is just wow graphically. Multiplatforms are judged by what they can bring in all platforms, and unfortunately for PS3 gamers, Skyrim is unplayable after you reach a certain point.
I am against Skyrim being GOTY contender, for the simple fact that once again, there was an audience (regardless of who they were) that were completely robbed when playing full price for this game, I don´t care how good the other versions of the game are.
Even tho I played limited time of Gears 3 because I personally don´t own a 360, I really like the franchise. IMO it is the best exclusive 360 franchise, but they made a huge mistake with the sawed off shotgun, ignoring the huge hardcore audience they have, to appeal to a more casual gamer.
As for what should be the GOTY criteria, quality. What is quality??? It depends on the judge, so it will always be questionable. It certainly should not be because it sells 10M first week.
But hey I have a very peculiar way of thinking. I think that I can have a lot more fun with the "worst" game. For me "good/bad" games are based on technical stuff plus how fun it is, so let´s imagine MW3 vs BF3, if I have a little more fun with MW3, but BF3 destroys MW3 in the technical side, I can honestly say that I had more fun with the "worst" game.
That is why reviewing should not be for anyone, you have to know how to balance the fun you have, with the technical merits a game has. So for me as a gamer FUN>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything else, but from a reviewing stand point, everything have to be balanced, that is why COD games sell, because they are great fun for a lot of people.

See my point is what is more quality and value to me and you ( Skyrim, Halo Anniversary etc ) is not the same quality or value to their opinion or taste. So quality and value is all respective of the person. Hence my original statement salses shold be a factor for what the public deemas GOTY, and what thegeneral public value where their money should go. |
No, Skyrim is a quality game, any self respecting gamer will see that, however not everyone is going to like the game, that's opinion, that's completly different.
Sales do not reflect which game is best, just because it sells the most doesn't mean it was enjoyed the most. If they made a 5th Indianna Jones film, but the quality was shit, yet it still sold out, that doesn't mean it's the best movie of the year, it's just the one advertized the most, or has the biggest pedigree (based on older movies), or just a film people who typically don't watch movies watch (as is the case will CoD and regular gamers).
Look at the metacritic of Modern Warfare 3. The user vote is like 3/10, if 7 million people own the game (per console) and the score is that low, is that the best game of the year? Just because more people heard about it, or played it, doesn't mean that their personal taste of the game is high. Yes there are some who wait days infront of a store to be first in line to get the game, but that's the case for nearly all AAA games.
Game awards should literally award the best game produced during the year. Sales do not affect the quality of the game all all. After all, the whole purpose of the game show is to reflect which game impact gamers the most, not which games impacted the most gamers.
GOTY is a measure of quality, not quantity. These are two hugely different aspects.

Fallout is around 6-7mill I believe. Over 2mill of PS3, over 3mill on 360, & probably a large portion on PC. Just saying. |
per console. CoD is also 20 million + combined sales. I think most HD gamers don't own both consoles, and if exclusives were MP, they would likely sell better too.

i dont see that.
to me it seems like an incredibly over hyped game that of course reviewers fell for.
then just weeks later (or days) realized how many glitches and bugs there are, many of which are game breaking.
in fact i would nominate for most unfinished game.
it seems to me it has way more bugs glitches, slowdowns, hiccups than even Crysis 2.
how none of these "juornalists" noticed these problems when they reviewed the game, is beyond me. but it seems very convienient that they just now are talking about them, after they reviewed it.

And this proves my point. Quality is subjective.
You may thiink a film is shit. But others may not.
@ Micheal
Saying any self respecting gamer is another way to say people who agree with my opinion.
There is no such thing as a self respecting gamer. Just people who agree with what you consider quality and people who disagree.
Films and game frannchises dont continue to sell unless people love them. At lest not in the milions and increasing each iteration. Sales does mean more people value that game.

Wha???
Yes it's over-hyped, but it's still a good game.
So what it's glitchy, play the game on PC or 360 and it's not as bad :P

the only system i have played it for is the 360, since that is the system my roomate owns, and he owns the game.
i had/have zero interest in the game, but based of my experience playing it, and watching him play it seems it is very glitchy.
apparenlty the PS3 version is even more so, which does not bode well.

But sales don't tell you how many people really enjoyed the game. A lot of people buy Call of Duty just because it's Call of Duty. Just like a lot of people buy a brand of product just because it's that brand.
Self Respecting Gamer - a Gamer who plays more then CoD and doesn't let personal opinions judge the quality of the game. osama is letting opinions judge the game. You may not like Skyrim, but it's a good game. I for one am not a fan of the game because I don't see much improvement for Melee battles, but everyone I know who actually owns the game has put in 70 hours plus into it, and I have never heard of any game affecting a large amount of gamers like that.
Let me extend the arguement with some examples. Final Fantasy XIII-2 will sell millions just because it's a Final Fantasy game. Yet XenoBlade, a game of much higher quality, will sell crap. Yes XenoBlade is on the Wii (which definatly hurt sales), but still either way, no JRPG really has a chance to top Final Fantasy sales. Is Final Fantasy the hands down best JRPG, or is it the most well know and hyped? Many would argue that the best JRPG ever made was Chrono Trigger, or Super Mario RPG, or even Dragon Quest IX, yet despite best in genre quality, a mainstream Final Fantasy Game will always outsell these.
How are the games medium different from movies? Sales =/= Quality, simple as that.
Yes there can be bias in nominees and winners, but that's why different websites or award shows are more critically acclaimed (this goes for Movies too). Most people don't care about the Grammy's for instance, but an Oscar. Same with games, I don't care much for Spikes GOTY, but I'm interested in Gametrailers (they only supply videos for Spike), and VGC.

Well glitches and interest aside. Can you understand why a lot of people who went out and bought this game are addicted to it?
You don't own it, and I said that anybody who is capable of naming a GOTY must have interest and own all nominees, otherwise then yes the results will be biased.
All in all, I hope Zelda wins Spike, but not other GOTY's. GOTY should go to Gears IMO, but overall I think Skyrim is the best game.
