A good amount of the hardcore have bough it I think. That plus the price cut make this good, but not great. It'll be interesting to watch from now on. The games are coming, so things are looking okay.

Well the mariokart audience alone is ~21mil. Not counting the millions( tens of millions?) who pirated it, borrowed it or bought it second hand.

I don't think ~140mil out of the ~149mil ds owners were casual lol.

What I meant by hardcore are the people who would by a console regardless of price just because of the Nintendo name.  Sorry for the confusion.

but, but I thought that 3DS was doomed...

The DS did great to say it didn't need a pricecut within 6 Months, and wasn't the follow-up to the best selling handheld ever.

It's a good amount for now but how long will it last? If sales start to slump they don't have much room to cut the price unless they want to lose even more money.

How long it'll last is up to the software Nintendo releases.

if i'm not mistaken, DS launched months later in other regions, so it's unfair to say that 3DS is doing better considering most of the DS sold at the time was Japan only?

I was about to say this.

However, the fact that it's even close is still mighty impressive, considering the original DS had a holiday period under its belt already in many regions, while 3DS is just coming up on its first one.  Not to mention that, even after adjusting for inflation, the price-dropped 3DS is still a bit more expensive than the DS was.

Too bad about Nintendo`s profits this quarter, though.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

And that's the more important part.  With the DS, Nintendo was making money from each sale.  Now, Nintendo is losing money from each sale of the 3DS.  Then we have last month's NPD which revealed that, even with the large price cut, the 3DS was still not selling incredibly well, except for Japan.  I'm sure the holidays will give it a boost, but there is also the Vita's launch in Japan that may steal some of its thunder.

VGChatz undertracked the 3DS by nearly one million :O

That is shipped not sold.

Right but there is no reason why Nintendo is shipping so much if it isn't selling a lot. Nintendo isn't Sony.

What about software sales?

Nintendo loses money per 3DS so as their latest financials show 3DS hardware sales do nothing for them.

Europe attach rate this week = 1.32. lol.

The 3ds are more than a game consol... it's a way of living.

Whit free internetspots, 3d video, 3d sport, netflix mariokart and super mario.. coming up... the fact that the the freaking thing can take 3d pictures and show them.. argumented reality. and all the 3d stuf in channels 3ds ware.. pretty soon 3d browsing and 3d calls.. And crismas are comming..
TIME TO RISE.. (and never look back)

Well, if those estimates are true, minus the $180 one, Nintendo must be spending a ton of money on advertising and on developing the WiiU.  I doubt that is the case, though.  If you notice in the other thread where the gaming division's revenue was posted, the time when PS3 and Wii were in development, the devisions still were profitable.  And it was only until the PS3 launched and was selling at a loss of a couple hundred dollars did it go into the red.  My guess is that the $180 is more accurate, so add packaging and shipping onto that and they are selling the 3DS at a loss.  I mean Nintendo have always sold at a profit, which is why they remain profitable even when not selling incredibly well.  So the original $250 price didn't come from them being super greedy and wanting WAY more than it cost to manufactor, it came from them trying to cover the costs to manufactor and gain a reasonable amount of profit.  This is why with the new price, Nintendo posted a loss recently.
