Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft - 1981 to 2011 gaming division profits chart

Is this chart showing profits/losses for the entire companies or just each company's gaming division (well, that's Nintendo's only product division).

EDIT: I wasn't paying attention, it says gaming division right in the thread title.

I'm surprised that MS lost that much money with their gaming division in the early 2000s despite having the second best selling console, unless this chart is factoring in the marketing events they held around the U.S.

Also, I'm not sure what you can really take from this chart since it doesn't break down what products are making up the numbers.

You are then moving the numbers that were provided earlier which I did not touch. Also, I am simply quoting this:

"The Consumer Products and Services division, the branch the PlayStation business falls into, has made a ¥229.8 billion ($2.8 billion) loss compared to the ¥10.8 billion profit for the same period last year." referring to fy 2012 http://www.vg247.com/2012/05/10/sony-hit-hard-in-fy2012-financials-ps3-sales-down/

My table is wrong... thanks I will fix that soon

I know this is an old thread, but I just realized that the 360 has generated a lot more profit then the PS3, and Wii/DS have generated 15x more profit then Sony ever has

Wow if true! I find it hard to believe that Ninty was never in the red during the 64 or Gamecube eras. But if so then kudos.

not only that, during ps1 nd ps2 eras, Ninty profits more than Sony with just 1 or 2 significantly a win for Sony.

Updated. :) I got bored. FY 2013 hasn't finished for MS or Sony. It also make the comparing of them a little difficult since they are comparing slightly different times (even different years). Sony and MS also produce income, good or bad, from other products in the same division so those numbers can be somewhat skewed. Enjoy!

I found something really really interesting...

Your 2.8b loss for 2012 (FY2011) was attributed to CPS Division like showed below:

The CPS Division had a lot more than Games and the loss was more about the others stuffs than Games only... so Sony changed again and now they showed the Game Divison data in the FY2012 results.

See? For Game only the FY2011 not loose money but profited... $350m profit.

So you have to fix your table.

The chart isn't accurate. For one Sony had losted billions in 2009, 2010, 2011, and $4.6 million in loses in 2012. They reported that themselves. Microsoft said they were debt free with their XBox back in 2011, so they were no longer in the red that year and beyond. So the numbers don't jive here. I don't know about Nintendo. They were making profits off their Wii from day one.

No Sony has made billions of dollars whereas Microsoft has lost billions.

The PS3 years (06-13) lost $3.6B, 360 years (05-13) made $1M, and Wii years made $15.5B
