Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft - 1981 to 2011 gaming division profits chart

looking at that chart, PS3 looks like a complete failure if you ask me
and they want to push Vita and PS4 with those numbers?

PS3 cost way to much money to make so it backfired, but it still sells a lot of consoles and is very popular so I don't know how pushing the PS4 is a bad thing or a failure. It has the brand power alone to have it sell high numbers with the highest price of any console by far, not making a new one would be a failure and dumb move.

Updated. :) I got bored. FY 2013 hasn't finished for MS or Sony. It also make the comparing of them a little difficult since they are comparing slightly different times (even different years). Sony and MS also produce income, good or bad, from other products in the same division so those numbers can be somewhat skewed. Enjoy!

Your number are wrong for the Sony's game division in 2012 and 2013... you have to convert to dollar first.

Game Division History

You are then moving the numbers that were provided earlier which I did not touch. Also, I am simply quoting this:

"The Consumer Products and Services division, the branch the PlayStation business falls into, has made a ¥229.8 billion ($2.8 billion) loss compared to the ¥10.8 billion profit for the same period last year." referring to fy 2012 http://www.vg247.com/2012/05/10/sony-hit-hard-in-fy2012-financials-ps3-sales-down/

Nonsense list.

Why is it nonsense? You don't agree with Microsoft losses? Was the Zune included in their division?

its nonsense because the numbers are useless without actually kowing what devices made what money from each division. Mine as well look at the companies as a whole than.

It is impressive how Sony managed to make almost no profit with the almighty PS2. Nintendo made more money with the gamecube failure than Sony with the massive PS2 success haha !!

Sony really should consider to leave the console business, they have a machine who sold 150 million and they made almost no profite, what is the purpose for them to work in this business if they can't make money even with the biggest sales success of a home consoles of all time? It makes no sense for me.

To be fair, Nintedo made most of the money with the GBA, not the GCN...

Also, Nintendo profit in 2008-2009 is greater than the sum of all Sony/MS EDD profit in all of their profitable years.

In gaming business

Nintendo is a professional.

Sony earned some money also.

Microsoft pays huge for not caring buyers benefits by putting garbage level product into their hands--------Red Ring of Death sin't that cheap like someone said for sure.

You don't know what you're talking about.

They will have likely made $2b ish on the PS2... and it benefited the company in more ways that just profit.
