Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 2012 - *February* Update

wow i not been around for ages so not seen the numbers. Have to say 360 has done very well and could just nick it. But either way technically it will be a draw.
Which is pretty amazing when you consider the 360 has not had a proper price cut for three years or so.

It makes you wonder how next year will go as PS3 has had a couple of price cuts to sustain its numbers. It is around £170 now here in UK. Where as MS have yet to actually do anything with the 360 other then the whole Kinect thing. If they cut and went under £99 they would destroy PS3 numbers. Question is though are MS now more concerned with posting more profits? Either way these numbers make you wonder if they will announce the new console next year at all. They don't need to. But as a gamer i hope both Sony and MS announce their new consoles. This gen has got a bit boring now tbh.

Is the year of the gamer, since we have so many great games to play. Especially if you own all 3 systems like myself.

Surprisingly, the 3DS did very well at the end of the year. Just need more JRPG and some new Nintendo games. Where is Kid Icarus?

Wow it is really close the Xbox 360 might actually outsell the Ps3 that is amazing. Considering how little exclusives it has and how many exclusives the PS3 has and how the PS3 had a price cut which people seem to forget. Given all of that it's doing amazing.

PS3 will probably win, but the 1.5 million lead they built up in 2011 just about completely evaporated. At the end of the year their gain will only be about 200K for 2011. Considering the PS3 also has Japan, that's not too impressive at all. The Xbox 360 did it without a large amount of exclusives. Imagine if they had they same number of exclusives as the PS3 did. I think things would be completely different right now.

Didn't they try that in 2010?  With Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Exclusive bundling and marketing of FF 13, along with CoD BO marketing/bundling. Halo Reach, Fable 3, Kinect Launch.......etc.... How did that work out in 2010?

Worked pretty good if I remember correctly. They still sold over 1 million units in this same week. The fact remains, the XBox 360 isn't going anywhere and with another price cut next year it's going to continue to sell great everywhere but Japan.

Did I say X360 was going somewhere? or that it wouldn't continue to sell great?   Cause I don't believe i did. You said if X360 released the same amount of exclusives it would be a completely different story?  I gave you last year as an example and it wasn't a complete different story.  PS3 won that year as well, so your point is moot...

Everyone shutup about marketing Xbox would win this race had they one more week but they didnt. Ps3 wins in sales this year. (Unless xbox sold 600k more in 6 days). Ps3 was very weak the last 2 months and xbox was strong. Next year Xbox will outsell Ps3 by a mile.

I doubt that very much, Christmas is over the marketing and the 100 gift card deals are going to be completely dead next week and ps3 will be selling a ton more every week again and win again next year, and the year after and the year after until it is off the shelf.

Yet it will always be in 3rd place. Since the ps3 could not close the gap this year there is no way it will next year.  So much for year of the ps3.

It seems to have won this year. It is the year of the PS3.
Just watch for adjustments. If last year is anything to go by, the PS3 is undertracked.

Yes cause adjusments are going to put the 360 in 3rd? With all the exclsuives, all the hype, all the shit talk the ps3 was barley able to outsell the 360 this year. I rememeber this was really suppose to be the year the ps3 closed the gap but it did not not even with all the exlcusives it had. Dont tell me you forgot the amount of fanboys claiming how the ps3 was going to kill xbox this year a year ago. This was not the year of the playstion by any means.

Next year wont either.

So let me get this straight... PS3 is going to sell more than it did last year (and this is without any possible future adjustments in Jan/Feb), its going to be the #1 selling console this year (and one of those consoles just had its best year ever, as well), had many high quality exclusives on it, yet this wasn't a good year for the PS3?  Sounds like someone is a wee bit biased.

The only way in my eyes you can truley say it was the year of the playstation if it took the lead from the 360. Since it did not do that when EVERYONE said it would (still rememeber how those obnoxious fanboy attacked everyone anyone who said it wouldnt) it was not the year of the playstation.

Still a great year for the console though.

The reason you say that is because your eyes are biased. So even if the PS3 had outsold 360 by 2m this year, it would not be "the year of the PS3" only because PS3 hadn't caught up. Get real and stop living in the past generation.

How i am i biased because i have a different defintion for what is "the year of ps3"? I am sorry but many people said this would be the year of the ps3 because it was going to surpass the 360 and all the games would be critically acclaimed. Neither happend. The only reason why people are calling me basied for saying this is because it causing butthurt, cause no one expected the 360 to sell like it did.

Anyways lets just leave it as that, i think i just derailed this thread.

Seriously now, who said that?

Well i wasnt on this site a year ago so i dont know if anyone here did back then , but lots of people from gametrailers, gamespot, and ign did.
Rememeber reading a comment on gametrailers that got 200 thumbs up listing all the ps3 exclsuives that were suppose to be AAA. Many comments how killzone 3 was going to kill Halo Reach. And also lots about the gap closing permentaly, plus i rememeber when the gap was below 3 million lots of people said it was only a matter of time. If i only i could rememeber the thread i would show you.

Can we just leave it now i dont want to get banned.

Wow if that is the case maybe Sony shouldnt have cut the price of the PS3 and simply just advertised more.  Get over it that was the advertising and marketing for a whole year.

Lets see they sold how many consoles since the price cut? I'm too lazy to look it up so I'll just high ball it at 10 million (since 10 is easy with math) and they cut it by 50 so 50 times 10mil is 500 mil, wow less then MS spent and that's way more then ps3 sold since the price cut. So cutting the price was cheaper then advertising as much as MS does.

Capulous said:You do realize that Sony has plenty of advertisements as well, right?  Advertising is a big part of business.  It is one of the reasons the 360 sells, but it is not the only.  It is also one of the reasons the PS3 sells as well. Claiming that the 360 sells mainly due to advertisements is so pointless.  Why do some of you people keep bringing this up like it matters?

MS spends far more on advertising then Sony ever does and yes advertisement is the only reason the 360 sells. Kinect doesn't even work, 360 has next to no games comming out, it's more expensive then the ps3 right now, it charges for online (which isn't marginally better then psn and worse then pc), 360 has no selling points.

Lol, nm. It's pointless to discuss things with certain types of people.

These forums are no different, trust me. I don't post much but I've been here for 4 years and things you read from fanboys is comedy gold. Now I can't stop laughing at this belief that MS has a budget of 1B for advertizing... or that the ads alone on the Xbox dashboard make enough revenue to operate Xbox Live... the funniest ones are that Sony started all this motion tracking with the PS Eye of the PS2... stop fighting man, it's pointless.

People are really over-simplifying this issue down to who spent most on marketing etc. Products sell for a wide range of reasons, some are to do with marketing, yes, but a producer's relationship with distributors is also key. This determines how much shelf space is given to a certain console and its games, what the positioning of this shelf space is in the store, how much that item is pushed by promotional deals in store, and so on so forth. Microsoft clearly has done well in this regard this Holiday, in addition to some good U.S.-centric advertising.

At the end of the day, selling a product because of marketing, distributor relationships, or simply good content does not legitimise of illegitimise success in the market place. There is no such thing. There are only sales and lack of sales.

Claiming Microsoft only have gained success this Holiday because of their marketing prowess is applying the same kind of logic as the fools who said Wii was only successful because it was "a fad". There real question is why was the Wii "a fad" four years and why is the Xbox 360 "a fad" this Christmas? Through the hard-work and ingenuity of the people working in those companies to sell entertainment. Your normative assertions about what the legitimate means for achieving commercial success in the video games industry are nuts. There are only sales and a lack of sales. Nothing more.

It seems like every female I know wants the Kinnect for the "dancing game."
