First off, I highly doubt it will "Fail" ... It may end up being less popular than the Wii, but even if it sold at roughly half the rate of the Wii it would still end up being a very viable platform.

Beyond that, we know nothing about how the PS4 or XBox 720 compare to the Wii U. Microsoft and Sony could end up releasing a system 12 to 18 months after Nintendo that costs $100 to $200 more than the Wii U with the development cost to take advantage of their additional processing power being so high that few third party publishers take advantage of it and development timelines becoming so long that the few games that do are released very sporatically. Or Microsoft and Sony could be focusing on releasing a console that is designed around Kinect or Playstation Move, and their fumbling of how that was handled as a add-on could undermine the success as a platform.

While I could be wrong, I'm anticipating that for the first 2 or 3 years of the next generation most games will still be designed around the limitations of current generation HD consoles and after that the next 2 to 3 years most games will be designed around the limitations of the weakest next generation console  (unless it is a true market failure) simply because of market size and increased development costs. In order to get a generational jump in graphics developers have tended to spend (in the range of) 4 times as much on games as they did in the previous generation because of the increased quantity and quality of artwork required to produce these games. Unless game prices go up by $20, I don't see how many publishers will find it economically viable to produce games wtih "next generation graphics" for next generation consoles until there is 80 or 100 Million potential customers across all platforms for the game

Maybe they will make them big enough so that Japanese people can live in them. I mean PS3 and 360 were huge :P

Even WiiU manages to be smaller than the 360 remodel plus adds a lot more in it :P

It could be argued that Kinect and Playstation move "failed" as platforms being that they didn't attract any meaningful support and their sales have fallen off (as far as I can tell) because of that ...

I'm not sure I agree, or atleast I don't have enough information to make that kind of prediction, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo has produced a system which is fairly close to what many large publishers want at this point in time ...

With how many publishers struggled with the budgets of games in the last generation, I don't think they want a bleeding edge console to be released at this point in time; and they certainly wouldn't want a console manufacturer who was pushing bleeding edge graphics as the only meaningful way to improve games right now. The reason for this is simple, the publishers will struggle/die if they start focusing on games that require multi-million sales to break even on development costs; and far greater sales to break even when marketing is considered.

Hypothetically speaking, a system with more modest specifications and a console manufacturer who was more interested in changing how games played than what they looked like could be very well received by publishers
