I hope Prometheus hangs on to win the weekend box office its a better movie then Madagascar 3. Even if Madagascar 3 wins out with 862 less screens and 39 more minute run time Prometheus is the real winner.

Not posting the chart yet (since I think they're still adding movies to it) but it looks like there's a $10 million gap between Madagascar 3 and Prometheus. Even if it wasn't the highest selling title, Prometheus was the 4th highest non-#1 debut of all time. Not bad imo.

And you'll be happy to know, Hunger Games just crossed the 400 million mark according to the chart. :)

Promethus lost a lot more box office on Saturday and Sunday then I thought it would its still a good opeing though and it already made some good money overseas also since it was released in a lot of markets a week ago already.  I think that The Hunger Games should be able to add at least another $5 milllion in the domestic market before it is pulled from theaters.  First time that two movies in the same year cross the $400 million mark domestically and I think that The Dark Knight Rises will join that list and The Amazing Spiderman has a outside change of doing it also.

Oh yeah Hunger Games $400 million!

Now I just hope it can beat Transformers: RotF's $402 million!

And it has yet to release in China and in Japan so it can absolutely reach $700 million worldwide!

Passing Toy Story 3 at $415 is out of reach but passing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Spider-Man is doable since I think it should be able to add at least another $5 million to its domestic box office before its pulled.  The Blu-Ray/DVD doesn't come out until Agust 18th so it will run some more weeks.  Still hasn't had its discount theater run yet either.

Discount theater will push The Hunger games until the week of its Dvd release. That is usually what my locale dollar theater does. Sometimes movies sit there for over a month!

I knew prometheus was going to fall Saturday to Sunday. Rated R and its Sci fi. Animation does much better on those days. I want to know how Prometheus got Way with such a smallish budget?

A lot of movies co exist in discount theaters while already being available on Blu-Ray/DVD for a couple of weeks.  My local discount theater still plays John Carter and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island even though they both are available on Blu-Ray/DVD.  Also I wouldn't call Prometheus's budget smallish (some movies this year went budget crazy).  Anything over $100 million is generally considered big budget.

I agree, but that is below the norm for a big budget movie. Still it is Sci fi and Rated R, so it should have been around 80 million to be on the safe side. It will be lucky to push out 140 million in the states though. Other big movies are on their way, and like I said this movie it sci fi and rated R. That does not always mean it will go down fast, but it does not help.

John Carter is also still at my local theater. If it continues to do well there they will leave it be, which annoys me because I am waiting for the next movie to come in there. Journey is still there as well. I am happy that John Carter is still there, it deserved more. Journey 2 did fine for what it was.

Journey 2 is actually one of this years suprise hits especially since its only a mediocre movie at best.  Prometethus still will have no prolem turning a profit from the box office alone since its overseas numbers are good it already made close to a $100 million abroad.

Looks like both Rock of Ages and That's My Boy will have sup par openings.

I actually chose to watch Prometheus over MIB3 and Snow white...such a dissapointment! Should of gone and watched something else....

I don't see it doing too well at the box office...its bound to have bad word of mouth.

I find it disturbing that companies are banking on overseas to make a profit. Spending too much money on movies these days!

The overseas market is bigger then the domestic market now and has been since the early 90's.  So pretty much all movies count on it to make their profits the only exception is low budget movies that don't get released overseas.  Also the overseas market would be even bigger if China didn't put restrictions on how many American movies can be shown their each year.

spurgeonryan said:
Any idea if Battleship was shown in China? I could not find it on mojo.

I agree, but would say it was a little later than the mid 90's. Some movies were bigger at that time, but still not enough to say overseas was where it was at back then.

Still we have some movies that are just pushing budgets that are hard to break even on even with overseas help.

I have no idea best place for such info is usually imdb they list opening dates for different countries.  I know The Hunger Games will open in Japan and China soon.  I know a couple of years back only a certain amount of American films could be shown in China per year.  I don't know where this policy stands as of 2012.  I agree with you on the out of control budget and not all movies have universal appeal.  With all that being said I'm suprised that Dark Shadows made $135 million dollars overseas.   If you look at data on box office mojo you can see that ever since the early 90's a majority of movies gained over 50% of their box office gross overseas but I guess you can say that Titanic the first movie to make over a billion dollars overseas caused the overseas box office explotion so late 90's then for sure.  Just checked imdb didn't see a release date for Battleship in China it did open in Hong Kong I guess rules on American movies are less strict their even though its been back under chinese control since 1997.
