Any idea if Battleship was shown in China? I could not find it on mojo.

I agree, but would say it was a little later than the mid 90's. Some movies were bigger at that time, but still not enough to say overseas was where it was at back then.

Still we have some movies that are just pushing budgets that are hard to break even on even with overseas help.

I have no idea best place for such info is usually imdb they list opening dates for different countries.  I know The Hunger Games will open in Japan and China soon.  I know a couple of years back only a certain amount of American films could be shown in China per year.  I don't know where this policy stands as of 2012.  I agree with you on the out of control budget and not all movies have universal appeal.  With all that being said I'm suprised that Dark Shadows made $135 million dollars overseas.   If you look at data on box office mojo you can see that ever since the early 90's a majority of movies gained over 50% of their box office gross overseas but I guess you can say that Titanic the first movie to make over a billion dollars overseas caused the overseas box office explotion so late 90's then for sure.  Just checked imdb didn't see a release date for Battleship in China it did open in Hong Kong I guess rules on American movies are less strict their even though its been back under chinese control since 1997.
