Can Disney beat Universal's record 2015 domestic gross - $2.445 billion?

It will fall short of tha... 4 13.33%

Finding Dory, Doctor Stra... 20 66.67%

It's going to be very cl... 6 20.00%

Total:30

I saw the hunger games, knowing nothing of the book, always thinking t it was a Battle Royal / Most Dangerous Game rip off and I dont know what to say, but liked the cast.

It doesn't suprise that such mediocrity is rewarded these days. Every year there are shit films grossing hundres of millions, or even billions wolrd wide. Such is not the case with Hunger Games though.

The movie was just average. Its overlong and void of genuine drama and action, just tween nonsense, albeit, for a slightly more mature audiance compared to Twitards and Harry Potter. It had tones of flaws, some good elements and noway near just this deserve $150 mil domestic on OW. By film standards, it doesn;t have the ingredients of a summer blockbuster or pre summer blockbuster, but somehow, its the biggest non sequal of all time, in March of months.

Having said that, I am glad Lionsgate has another big franchise under their belt after The Expendables. I am glad this has grossed higher than Twilight, I am glad these talented young actors will be more recognized, but I just dont see where all this appeal came from. Its shocking in fact.

I knew their forecast of $ 71M was pushing it a bit .

Nonetheless,It's $20M ahead of New Moon right now,so it should finish with at least $320M,which would be amazing for a non-sequel. Imagine what the sequel will do.And by tuesday,it's gonna beat I Am Legend to become the highest grossing post-apocalypse movie ever.

Wrath of the Titans seems to have opened with around $78M overseas which is even more than what The Hunger Games opened with a week ago ($59M),and yet,in NA, it has grossed only 1/2 of THG's 2nd weekend. XD

Very well done Mordred! Are these charts just for America? (Canada and USA.) If so Hunger Games did absolutely amazing! It's not very surprising though since the book is extremely popular. I hope I can go to see it soon. ^_^

Yes,the chart is for North America ( USA + Canada ). It's surprising how it's doing so much there compared to the rest of the world. Definitely not a normal pattern for this kind of movie .

I don't understand how/why Disney is expecting to lose 200M on John Carter, it has already paid off with worldwide gross of $254M. Kinda confusing :/

Marketing costs, probably. Usually they're about even with production costs, so...

OT - happy for the Hunger Games. The series as a whole definitely surprised me who was expecting it to be akin to Twilight or Transformers.

It dispels the myth of technological progress, portrays complex relationships on a believeable light, the female characters are infinitely superior to those on your average Hollywood macho "shit blowin' up" movie and is thematically superior to both Harry Potter and Twilight. Give a chance to the books if you are one of those who give a sacrossanct character to dispeling teenage-oriented culture first-hand.

They expect to lose $200 million during their second fiscal quarter ending March 31. So the remaining gross that the movie will amass from here on out will go into the third quarter. A lot of articles forgot to highlight this fact.

So as of March 31, the movie has grossed about $250 million worldwide which suggests that they need to reach $450 million for the movie to become profitable.

So as a whole it won't be as big of a loss. Closer to $100 million in loss I think.

Reviews don't really have an impact on the opening weekend, but on the legs of the movie..so I'm guessing people are just holding off because they want to see Snow White and the Huntsman more .

That movie looks GREAT! I wouldn't go see Mirror Mirror because it looks like it could get annoying. (All the humour.) Snow White and the Huntsman looks pretty interesting and is a darker story. (A better twist on the fairytale than the humour that is Mirror Mirror (If the trailer played itself correctly in my mind  then it is indeed supposed to be comical))
