3DS figures are "bad" relative to the recent DS figures (2006-2010) but most of you seem unaware of how slowly the original DS started at a lower price in the West than 3DS before becoming a huge hit.
The main factors in the eventual Western DS turnaround were:
1) An absolute explosion in DS in Japan starting in late 2005, attracting far greater Japanese support when all other platforms were shrinking or irrelevant (PS2 was dying in 2005 in Japan, PSP / GC / Xbox / X360 / GBA were dying or tiny bases)
2) The movement of major DS content from Japan to the West from mid 2006 - late 2008 right as the DS Lite emerged with a different form factor.
3) Increased Western support as DS HW grew substantially on the previous two reasons. Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Imagine, and other major brands all came once the market grew.
3) GBA finally dying off in the West in 2006 (vs. 2004-2005 in Japan) once saturation got above 40m
DS thus went 5m - 11m - 23m - 30m - 31m before finally starting to decline in the past couple of years. The original DS sold 2.6m in the USA in 2005 - numbers comparable to what PS3 did in the USA at $599 in 2007 before correcting all the way up to 11.2m in 2009. In Dec 2008 / Dec 2009 / Dec 2010 DS sold in two weeks to five weeks what it sold over the entirety of 2005 - so if the 3DS gets any kind of steady infusion of hits / content it should eventually sell like 3DS did at its peak.
