Dude... wth are you talking about? there is 1 special move button(B), 1 regular attack button(A) you combine those with 1 of the 3 directions(left/right are the same thing, really), or no direction at all. The smash attacks are only stronger versions of your regular attacks. If you're jumping, your regular attacks sometimes change a little, but usually not by much. Other than that, you have blocking dodging and throwing which are all done with the R button.
There aren't really any chain combos that require any signifigant amount of memorization. Heck, Mario 64 has nearly as much button memorization. B = attack, A = Jump, Z = crouch, A then B = jump kick, Z then A = backflip, Z then b equals spin kick, run then A then B = dive, A then Z = ground stomp etc
If you're having trouble remembering combo's that badly, then just use this 2 simple keys: press your control stick in the direction of your opponent and press A to attack them, Up + B = triple jump

It's the same reason I can't stand the Soul Calibur series. As for this annoying every Wii owner must buy Brawl or they are insane campaign I see on most video game forums, don't forget that 70% of Gamecube owners did not buy Melee (although I was one of the 30% who did) so there a lot of people like Rol and me who have 0 anticipation for the game itself. |
Not sure what Smash Bros game you played...but most fighting games have stupid combos you need to memorize, yes, but Smash Bros has A+direction (up, down, left, right), or B+direction. That's every move right there, other than jumping, grabbing, and shield, each with their own buttons. Not much memorization going on.
Edit: What Grey Acumen said ^. Also, in most fighting games, every character has different special combos you need to memorize. In Smash, every character uses the same button combinations...the moves are just different. It's easy to pick up, but hard to master, as it's not memorization that gets you, but simply being able to think quickly and...fight well. And that's how it should be.
And if you can't keep up with top players, well heck, there's always the handicap feature, don't be ashamed, it's there to make the game fun for everyone.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
^^^Melee was the Smash Bros. I was playing (I did play the original but beyond not liking it I don't recall anything about it). It is true, my brain works a lot quicker than my fingers :P, which is why turn based strategy games are my favorite genre. If the moves were different not the combos, I thought it was the other way around but I haven't played Melee for the last 3 or 4 years, then I'll ammend my original comment to the dozens of moves and dozens and dozens of interactions to remember. I know about the handicap which wouldn't have bothered me had I ever played the game with anyone. I didn't since I prefer playinig games I actually enjoy.
Nevertheless, the point remains, I can't stand the brawl series. I do have to say that you brawl lovers are almost as annoying as 360 lovers (is it really so hard to accept that something you love isn't loved by everyone?), but you own Wiis so I'll forgive it.
you need to have a real person to play against to really enjoy Smash Bros.

The first Smash Bros was rubbish. My first experience with the game involved playing through the one player game once and then not touching the game again for six months. At a later date I gave the game a bit more time but it was a shallow and largely worthless experience.
I obviously had zero anticipation for the sequel and have only played it a small amount. But for the most part the series doesn't do much for me, which isn't surprising given I have a large preference for single player story-driven games so a game like SSB is hardly directed at me.
@Picko: Wait, so you're saying that you played the single-player of a multiplayer-focussed game and didn't like it, and that's your basis for not liking the game? Of course it's your opinion, but you really should ry it as it was meant to be played before dumping it.

I'm gonna support Picko on this one. If Single Player games are his bread and butter, then Smash Bros really isn't a good selection for him. Like I said, Smash really shines on creating an intense battle atmosphere with multiple fellow players. I can't even remember the last time I played any of the single player modes.

That's a fair point, but to quote Picko: "The first Smash Bros was rubbish." You can't use the experience of player the single-player of a multiplayer-focussed game (a fighting game, no less) as a basis for saying that the game sucks. "I didn't like the first game" or "The games don't do it for me because i like singleplayer" would have been more acceptable, as I think most will agree.
