Forums - Nintendo - Man gone a month a 3DS goes to hell in a hens basket, what all did I miss?

I'm fine with my gba nes model at the moment (which remains the only portable including cell phone capable gaming systems that I've ever owned). If I had the money or a Costco nearby (which I don't, I would buy a 3DS for the Ambassador program offerings right now especially since some of those games aren't confirmed as to whether they'll ever be released again). Personally, I would be kind of torn between a 3DS and an XL at the same price as I'm getting to be an older guy and I've heard the XL screens are actually pretty easy on the eyes.

As for DS Lite for many years I pushed for it to come down to $99 but now that's only $80.00 less than 3DS, I don't think I would buy a DS Lite until it comes down in price again to $79.99.

Cry me a river!!! So the price for 3DS got slashed a lot, so what?? THats a good thing, that means the people who were holding off on buying it will now do so. So some stocks went down, tough tittie, i dont have any stocks in Ninty, sucks for people that do. THats the way it goes

Umm yah its very sad, no 3DS price dropping is not a good thing for all of us who purchased it day one. The Ambassador program barely benefits me I would rather have my 80$ back thank you.It also means alot less profit for Nintendo infact a loss, so that means Nintendo has less money to invest in R&D and software which means less games! Thats bad for everyone! As for the stocks and investors, they keep Nintendo alive without those stocks and investors Nintendo could die. Sure you may think so some stocks went down , big deal. It is a huge deal if WiiU doesn't sell well and investors drop the stocks lower the company could die or be taken over by another company.

I know your not the biggest Nintendo fan. But a bad thing for Nintendo is bad for the entire industry and all those who game in it. Nintendo is the industry, without Nintendo their possibly wouldn't be a games industry. They are the life blood of the entire industry it is them who brought the world through the great gaming crash, it is them who brought Sony into the industry, they brought us 3D, they brought us analog sticks they brought us.... they are the reason the industry is alive.

Nintendo is sacred, no little booh-hoo, you should show them some respect. Nintendo is the best gaming company in existance and them going down is a very sad day for the entire industry. Sure they haven't bit the dust but this loss should be mourned by all. If Nintendo bit the dust it would be 10x more tragic then the loss of Atari and Sega combined.

Its a sad month for all Nintendo fans!

SO if Ninty were to go down you think video games would just stop?? Get real, dude. MS, Apple, Sony would still make their PSs, Xboxs and Iphones. Your giving Ninty Way to much credit. Look, i dont hate Ninty, i have loved every console/portable they have made with the exception of Wii & VB, for the same reasons ayou listed. You purchased a 3DS day one?? Whose fault is that?? No one told you to do that. Yeah that sucks for you and the couple of thousands of people but for all the million potential buyers this is great. I know im thrilled thats 80 bucks i dont have to spend. As a rule of thumb i never buy a console at launch for just this reason.

Best company in all of existence?? Maybe to you and some others but not everyone feels that way. I get that your madly in love with Ninty, but you need to pump your brakes a bit, i dont think its healthy for someone to be that attached to a game company, of all things. I was like that with Sega, its not cute.

Dude I never said gaming would just stop. But for me gaming would become alot less attractive. Right now in my library of games over half are made directly by Nintendo. If you then exclude all the third party content on Nintendo platforms I am left with like a 6th of my games are on X-Box or PS3/PSP. So yes gaming would almost end for me if Nintendo was gone.

Nintendo deserves even more credit then I gave. If it wasn't for Nintendo the industry would have collapsed in the 80's. Then if it wasn't for Nintendo Sony would never have entered the industry so all you Sony fans would be without PlayStation. If it wasn't for Nintendo we wouldn't have a single Nintendo title (Duh). If it wasn't for Nintendo their would be no handheld gaming consoles unless someone else developed one but with the game industry crashing in the 80's that is highly unlikely. So without handheld gaming platforms and Sony would we have the smart phones we have today? What about technology the games industry has driven in PC's and handheld's, without the technology made by Nintendo or for Nintendo or inspired by Nintendo, where would the games industry be?

If Nintendo never existed and thus Sony never entered gaming, Microsoft would never have built the X-Box. Essentially without Nintendo gaming would be nowhere near what we have today. Infact console gaming may not have existed at all past the 80's crash. Then theirs the impact Nintendo has had in Japan from their cards and toys to their hotels and taxi service. To being one of Japans oldest and most successful companies.

You can't give Nintendo too much credit. Without Nintendo, Miyamoto etc...etc... gaming as we know it would never have come to be. So due to the reasons above Nintendo is the gaming industry. They are the chosen ones the light in hours of darkness they are hope and future , past and present of video games.

Now I talked about why Nintendo deserves so much credit for the past but what about the present?

Nintendo this generation has done so much for gaming. If Wii never launched at that lower price point, Microsoft and Sony would not have rushed to cut hardware costs and prices. If GBA hadn't made so much money Sony would never have released the PSP, then the Nintendo DS is what drove Sony to invest a butt load into R&D and software development to bring us a new handheld experiance via PSP and now Vita. Had DS not used a touch screen or dual screens would Sony have actually put a touch screen on Vita? What about the gyro sensors Nintendo pioneered last generation? Would those sensors be in the I-Phone or in Vita? Maybe , maybe not. If Nintendo hadn't brought us an innovation like motion controls would Sony have ever released Move? Or Microsoft Kinect? If Nintendo hadn't shifted focus to girls and older folks and targetted the blue ocean how many gamers would never have picked up a controller? Would virtual pets have made a comeback in the form of a Nintendog like game, or how about games that excersize your mind like Brain Training? Without Nintendo in the industry it would be screwed.

Is Nintendo the best company on earth? In my opinion yes, in others maybe not. Is Nintendo the best and only  video game exclusive console manufacturer? Yes and that is factual as they only make games. Microsoft and Sony have hundreds of side buisnesses they can count on. Nintendo is the only hardware manufacturer whose soul purpose is to make video games.

If Nintendo went down the industry may go on, but it would be a very sad day and the industry would never be the same. Infact even the loss of Sega has vastly effected the industry a loss of Nintendo would be 10x more impactful.

Also I notice in your post you credit Apple as one of the main game companies. Apple barely develops games at all, infact they don't even have a mainstream games console. A phone that can play games hardly ranks as a games console, if we call the I-Phone a games console then every single phone on the market is. Heck Black Berry has been around way longer and they were never creditted as having a games console.

Apple is not a game company. They barely even make games at all. They make hardware that can play games on it, but the games aren't even a main feature for the hardware, first its a phone then an MP3 player then a movie player then an App and video game platform.

We don't consider IBM, Dell or HP game console manufacturer's and their PC's play games, infact their PC's have more game support then all of Apple's devices combined. Apple is a loser , they couldn't fill Nintendo's shoes even if Sony, MS and Nintendo all went bankrupt and Apple was the only company with a gaming platform. Apple will never be a true game company like Nintendo is, not even with Steve Job's. Any buddy who is dilusional enough to believe Apple will take over the industry in ten years (And believe their is a moron who does) they need to put a helmet on, take some medication and be put in a padded room because they are insaine!

I'm not saying Apple isn't an amazing company or that Steve Jobs isn't an amazing CEO and master mind. But Apple could never and never will replace Nintendo. Even if Nintendo went bankrupt Apple is completely incapable of replacing them. Its even impossible for them to replace Sony and while more possible but highly unlikely replace Microsoft.

Apple is not a game company in the sense of Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony. or even EA, UbiSoft or any other mainstream console software developer. So please stop giving them credit where no credit is due!

You made it seem like the industry would stop in your intial post, ok it might stop for you?? Fantastic, not me and i lot of other people. Hell, ive only bought 3 Ninty made games for Wii since i had it in 08, and another 3 for DS, so im not emotionally attached to that company as some others. But to each his own.

I dont need a history lesson. I already know my stuff, the issue is not where we WOULD be without Ninty, i know it would suck. But what WILL happen if Ninty goes down. simple future. Ninty is the only games company that makes hardware??? And?? Thats not as cool as it used to be. Your acting like SOny or MS couldnt make a console that either matches what a Ninty console can do or surpass it. Matter of fact they already do and its been like that for years. IMHO the last two consoles have been meh, in terms of hardware and features. If they dont make hardware they will just pull a Sega

As for Apple, should have made myself more clear, but the Iphone and Ipads are beasts and picking up steam, no matter how much we may not like it. I dont hate Ninty i dont love Ninty. There a company and like most companies im just indifferent

" So without handheld gaming platforms and Sony would we have the smart phones we have today? "

please explain this to me... the correlation between handheld gaming and the evolution of phones into smartphones...

"Then if it wasn't for Nintendo Sony would never have entered the industry"

" Sony never entered gaming, Microsoft would never have built the X-Box"

this point is nonsense there is no way to tell if at some way down the line sony or microsoft or some other company wouldn't have gotten involved in gaming... sure nintendo accelerated their involvement but to say you know for certain that no other companies would have gotten involved in gaming is nonsensical

"Had DS not used a touch screen or dual screens would Sony have actually put a touch screen on Vita? What about the gyro sensors Nintendo pioneered last generation? Would those sensors be in the I-Phone or in Vita?"

this is a sony ericsson smartphone released in 2003 ( before the 3ds ) which has a touchscreen and touchscreen gaming would nintendo have used the touchscreen had sony ericsson not used it? see how ridiculous that point is now? :

next thing you'll tell me is that nintendo is the first company to use tablets for gaming

"Would virtual pets have made a comeback in the form of a Nintendog like game, or how about games that excersize your mind like Brain Training?"

yeah its impossible that any other company would have done this because nintendo is the only company that comes up with original gaming ideas

"they brought us 3D"

how? pcs have had full 3d gaming for years, the ps3 had it long before the 3ds and sega attempted 3d gaming before also with the master system  :

"they brought us analog sticks"

absolutely wrong several game companies before nintendo used analog sticks but somehow people tend to disregard that

the vectrex game controller

it truly saddens me to see people give such undue credit to nintendo for things that other companies played a bigger role in developing

I don't think people reject the 3ds. What People did not like was the 250$ Nintendo 3ds. Since last week price cut, the 169$ 3ds preorders on amazon USA have been really, really good. You just need to check the amazon USA Top 100 videogames best sellers list to see what I am talking about. In amazon Japan the 15,000 yen 3ds is the only console in the top 30, even top 5 with the Red one in video games best sellers. So I see a great market for the 3ds with its new price. If sony would have done something like this in the early days of the ps3 , I am sure it would have been the best selling console of this generation.

C'mon man, Nintendo have survived much MUCH worse periods than this so I think predictions of their demise are a bit premature at this point in time.
I don't get it. When I first heard about the price cut my initial reaction was 'Thank god they came to their senses'...not 'My God...it's the end!'. I see it more as putting right what was wrong before any real damage is done. The price cut HAS made the 3ds more appealing in many people's eyes so how is that a negative?
(and I'm pretty excited about the ambassador program. It's better than nuffin and there's a few games in there I don't own anymore and wouldn't mind...fusion and yoshi's island to name but 2.).

I never predicted Nintendo would bite the dust, I barely even hinted that I speculate that. I simply said a price cut and such is a bad thing for Nintendo. The fall of Nintendo stocks in value is also a horrible tragic event. I then later mentioned how important Nintendo is to the industry and said if they went down so would most of the industry. I wasn't speculating they are going down infact I think they could survive a loss of 3DS and WiiU if they had too.

169.99$ is not coming to their senses. If they are loosing money on the hardware then it is not a smart buisness decision and isn't like Nintendo. Nintendo never looses money on hardware and never should look at what happened with PS3 and 360? They made so much less money then Nintendo did. Look at PS2/X-Box both sold at a loss to begin with and infact Microsoft ended the generation at a massive loss. Sony infact turned less profit from their successful PS2 then Nintendo did on GameCube/GBA.

Fact is if its bad for Nintendo its bad for us the consumer. You may be saying yay its cheaper that 80$ saved. But that is what 6-8 games that could be developed with that lost money. Less profit for Nintendo means less games and content for us, then it means less R&D which means less hardware upgrading. Less money then means investors jump ship, less investors means the company is easier to take over. The company being easy to take over means someone might take it over.

In the end Nintendo taking a loss on each unit will mean millions if not over a billion in damage to Nintendo. Which will directly effect us the consumer. So no their is no reason to rejoice or be happy. It may be nice temporarily to pay 80$ less but you'll be complaining when Nintendo can't pump out the same amount of software or support you as much as they could in the past!

Actually let me correct you on something. The whole "Nintendo turned over a bigger profit than Sony with the PS2" is extremely skewed because Sony has more departments bunched up along with their Playstation gaming division.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

Around the Network

What a fascinating thread.

Having actually watched the history of Wii and DS like I hadn't watched previous systems, and having seen the current Nintendo decline coming, maybe not as early as some, but certainly quite awhile ago, and having learned some of the previous history of gaming and how Wii and DS fits in... This thread is fascinating.

People who didn't see this coming either due to lack of foresight or just apathy (which is fine), are now trying to figure things out after the fact, and having a tricky time it seems. It helps to just, simply, look at the games. Whether Nintendo is abandoning their customers will be evident just by looking at the games they made for DS vs. what they are making for 3DS.

VGC lists 52 Nintendo-published games that sold 1 million copies on DS. I will put them into some loose groups:

Nintendogs
Brain Age
Brain Age 2
Animal Crossing
Big Brain Academy
Flash Focus
Tomodachi Collection
English Training
Clubhouse Games
Personal Trainer:Cooking
Rhythm Heaven
Tetris DS
Style Savvy
WarioWare
Art Academy
Personal Trainer: Math
Common Sense Training

This is one third of the Nintendo-published million sellers on DS. The themes here are short burst playing, daily playing, and social and real-life integration. Many of these were commonly called "non-games" at the time they were coming out one after another. On 3DS, people were underwhelmed by the Nintendogs sequel, and we don't yet know about the presumed Brain Age and Animal Crossing sequels, but the greater issue is whether there is a major attempt to cater to these customers, as a matter of the DIRECTION for the 3DS. Let's look at another group of games:

Pokemon
Pokemon
Pokemon
Pokemon
Pokemon Dungeon
Pokemon Dungeon
Pokemon Dungeon
Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Ranger
Dragon Quest
Dragon Quest
Dragon Quest
Mario & Luigi
Mario & Luigi

Obviously I do not know the difference between all these games, and obviously the database has issues with which DQ games were Nintendo published or not. But the point is, there were 10 hit Pokemon games on DS, and those made up only a fraction of the RPGs on DS. Once again, this is not part of the corporate direction for 3DS so far. Obviously there will be Pokemon games in the future, but the larger question is whether RPG fans are being catered to on 3DS like they were on DS. Answer yourself. Let's look at a third group of games:

NSMB
Yoshi's Island DS
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Kirby Squeak Squad
Super Princess Peach

Once again, is this any part of the direction of 3DS? Do these customers have games to play on 3DS? Let's keep going with a little catch-all category of puzzle-ish games:

Layton
Layton
Layton
Mario vs. DK
Mario vs. DK
Mystery Case Files

Okay. Layton was at launch and the Mario vs. DK and MCF franchises seem active at the moment. But I don't think this is a major pillar for either console. How about sports and racing:

Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario and Sonic
Mario and Sonic
Mario Hoops

Certainly, this is part of 3DS' direction, with MK and M&S both coming. But this is not a pillar of the DS, just kind of a supplement to those pillars. And lastly, 3D action/adventure games.

Super Mario 64 DS
Zelda
Zelda

How about these customers? To me, this is very clearly the direction of 3DS, with Pilotwings, Ocarina, 3D Mario, Kid Icarus, Star Fox and Luigi's Mansion being many of the main games announced or released for the system.

Now you can decide for yourself. Are the DS customers abandoning Nintendo, or is Nintendo abandoning them? Yes, there is Nintendogs, and Brain Age, Animal Crossing, NSMB and Pokemon are all presumed to be coming. But what is the direction of 3DS; who is Nintendo really catering to with a full slate of games beyond the obvious mega-hits?

Run some similar exercises with the lineups of all Nintendo systems. Align what you find with what you already know about how those systems sold. I believe you will gain a new appreciation for the hubris and stupidity of Nintendo through the years, and find that they have only themselves to blame for their up-and-down history. I say this as a great fan of the company: I hope it collapses as quickly and as thoroughly as possible.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

How do you know they are leaving the audiences??? THe system just came out, you have no idea what Ninty has coming down the pipe. How about the direction of the 3DS is to provide not only the same games they provided on DS plus some core games that were not able to be done for the DS. Hell that could be a problem itself, maybe people think its too similiar to the DS they already own and see no need to update

Hell that could be a problem itself, maybe people think its too similiar to the DS they already own and see no need to update

Read his post again and put two and two together. It really isn't hard.

I read his post, i just dont agree with it. I think NINty is trying to get all the audiences with the 3DS, something they didnt have with the Wii. But its still to early to tell. I could be wrong

Do you agree with this statement:?

Whether Nintendo is abandoning their customers will be evident just by looking at the games they made for DS vs. what they are making for 3DS.

After all, you said this:

The direction of the 3DS is to provide not only 1.) the same games they provided on DS plus 2.) some core games that were not able to be done for the DS.

The evidence I provided in my post shows that Nintendo is NOT making "the same games they provided on DS."

Having lived through the DS explosion, I believe the three pillars of DS success to be "non-games", top-down RPGs, and 2D action/platform games. These games are not on 3DS and are not announced for 2011, and the best you can do is to say "you have no idea what Ninty has coming down the pipe." Well, I do know that "non-games," top-down RPGs and 2D action/platform games were not made for 3DS' first year. And 3DS is "going to hell in a hens basket."

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
