Forums - Nintendo - Top Japanese producers comment on Wii U

As part of Famitsu's Wii U featurette, there's a section with a few commentaries made from some Japanese produces and developers. Here is what they had to say:

Tomonobu Itagaki (Valhalla Game Studios)

Said that he has a lot of ideas. He'd like to bring not just Devil's Third to the system, but a variety of other things.

Jun Takeuchi (Capcom)
He believes that developers' skills will be shown in how they can make use of the controller without having it draw the eyes away too much from the television screen. If Wii U has a strategic price, it could be a big hit, he said.

Hideyuki Kobayash (Capcom)
He feels the new controller is like a challenge issued to game creators. He's excited to see what types of games creators will make.

Shuu Takumi (Capcom)
Said that coming into contact with new devices makes his dreams expand. As an example of use, he said that the controller could be used for exploring a crime scene from a different perspective.

Kenichi Ogasawara (Tecmo Koei)
He believes Wii U will give birth to new types of titles that use the system's dual screen setup. Personally, he feels the multiplayer possibilities of having one player use the controller screen while the other payers view the television screen.

Yousuke Hayashi (Tecmo Koei)
He believes the Wii U has the ability to realize completely new game experiences.

Akihiro Suzuki (Tecmo Koei)
The E3 videos made him forecast that the system will deliver new, never-before-seen types of games. While he can't give any information about projects at present, the controller does get the creator spirit moving.

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Sega)
He thinks it's a big thing that Nintendo's hardware has unified around the concept of having two screens. He's personally interested in seeing if the switch to HD will bring changes to the Wii market.

Shinji Mikami (Tango)
He hasn't gotten his hands on the system yet. He's happy about the HD support.

Yoshifumi Hashimoto (Marvelous Entertainment)
The new controller looks like it will lead to some new ideas. For example, in Harvest Moon when you're in your in-game room, if you turn on the television, the video from the television could be shown on the controller screen. He said that he'd personally like to try out a game that splits up roles, where one player uses the new controller and the second player uses the Wiimote.

Akihiro Hino (Level-5)
Said that because stylus-based games like Professor Layton can now be played, they can consider ports. He also said that the system could expand the type of game that can be played in the living room, so he'd like to think about these types of game in the future as well.

Jiro Ishii (Level-5)
He was excited just seeing Zelda in HD. He's personally excited about seeing the changes the controller brings to board games and card games.

If everyone thinks the controller is so unique, and brings so many new ideas... then I want to see at least some of those ideas brought as games. We need less talk, more action.

Like Jiro Ishii, I like Zelda in HD. It's amazing how good it looks, still I prefer TWW/SS styles.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

WiiU is going to fail just like the Wii. Devs aren't going to put innovative games on it until Nintendo make some sample games for 3rd parties to make bastardized copy an cash in.

Great to see that everyone likes the controller and wonders what other developers will be able to come up with.

Of course, since everyone thinks this way, nobody is actually going to make a game. At least in one way the Wii U is just like the Wii.

Saved me from typing this out myself...

Way to early to tell, Rol and Galaki. Wii was one console with a serious flaw for devs: no HD. Wii U doesn't have to follow its pattern. With Wii U though, devs should have no excuse.

HD is a convienent excuse. Look at the Move, 3rd parties are afraid of new ways to play the games.

You are young and naive.

You are probably also one of those who believe that disc space was one of the reasons why third parties dropped Gamecube support.

What's with the name-calling? I guess you're playing so I'll take it lightly :)

No, I'm not one of those who believed that disc space was one of the reasons why third parties dropped GC support. PS brand power caused 3rd parties to drop GC support, and it's the same that should happen on the reverse side, now with Nintendo's home console brand power rising from the dead (under Iwata's excellent leadership).

I was 3 years old when Final Fantasy released on the NES and grew up on that system. Can you really consider me that young? People think I'm naive until I have a chance to defend my points.

Anyway, why the heck would you assume I thought that? HD and Hard Disks, though having the same acronyms, have absolutely nothing else in common in terms of features for a console. For all I know I should consider you young and naive, because as far as I can remember we compared consoles by bits and graphics power back in the day. Now we call it a convenient excuse.

I've always been a positivist, but that doesn't make me naive. I have my reasons to believe Nintendo will prevail again this generation. It's a business thing, not a partisan thing.

But despite it being a joke, you aren't exactly helping your cause here. "PS brand power", pfff...

That sure doesn't explain why the Gamecube was dropped and the Xbox was not. As far as the industry is concerned, Nintendo has no brand power.

And no, I didn't think that you meant a hard disk drive when you said HD. The point I was making (or trying to make) is that you seem to eat up the excuses that third parties made up. The biggest flaw of the Wii was that it was successful and it needed to be destroyed to correct the world order. The Wii U can have all kinds of features, but it will never be able to overcome the fundamental issue: there is no place for Nintendo in the home console market.

Nintendo has two options:

1) Combat the industry.

or

2) Let the industry succeed.

The Wii was option 1 which is why it was so despised by the industry. The Wii U is option 2 and I am quite sure that the industry is laughing behind Nintendo's back already. As long as there are both Sony and Microsoft present in the home console market, Nintendo has only one company they can depend on: themselves. Should Nintendo fail Nintendo, then we are going to enter a dark age. Just look at the 3DS, third parties show no interest to pull that thing out of its slump. No matter what happens, there is no winning for Nintendo when it comes to third parties.

I don't want to enter the dark ages! :(

Is there anything we can do to help the situation?

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Sounds good, but less talk, more games please!
Crime Scene? My, I'd love LA Noire 2 or something on it, using the controller as a magnifying glass...
...Lens Of Truth?
Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
Remember when Microsoft got a bunch of top Japanese devs to get together and talk about how awesome Kinect was?
Yeah...
(as subtext, that's not a bash against Kinect, but a point about how hollow these sort of shout-outs can be)
 The 3DS will never come close to the DS. How about these drawbacks, they are ones that actually do matter:
1) Atrocious battery life for Nintendo standards combined with a high price tag.
2) Virtually no sequels to DS games in sight.
3) Virtually every game features 3D gameplay.
As for the Wii U third party support, what confidence are you talking about? The Wii U is the successor to the system that couldn't sell third party hardcore games.
1) New models coming out.
2) Who cares
3) That goes hand-in-hand with what I said, otherwise it's irrelevant.
Wii U confidence, I'm talking about business confidence. They can trust that if they release a game on the Wii U, chances are it will sell. They can trust that the Wii U will sell in large numbers like its predecessor => large install base.
And you said it yourself in another thread, it could sell 3rd party hardcore games, even the bad ones in million numbers. Now I'm quoting you bud, I'll try to find the post. Anyways, this article isn't limited to core games I hope you realize that.
And here is the magic post: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4153449
This is the most critical point. More people in the long run will care about Rol's second point than any of the other issues 3DS has going for it
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
less talk and more game Development.
i want WiiU but yet to have a reason to own one. don't tell me something show me something.
