It sold on name value alone. We won't realize the damage FFXIII did to the series until the next Final Fantasy flops.

Pretty much this. The days of people buying Final Fantasy main series games without thinking twice might very well be over.

Also, Mass Effect 2 is overrated, but it's just one example of the gaming media increasingly trying to push the agenda that Western games have become dramatically better than Japanese ones.

ME2 is actually in the same boat as FFXIII, because fans of both series complained about the unnecessary removal of RPG elements.

Meh that is bullshit, it is just the J-gamers who are in a state of denial, a lot of them complain about those reviewers and at the same time they complain that the new J-games are not the best ones in the franchise...

This is basically what a lot of J-gamers said:

Tekken 6 not the best in the franchise, same for Soul Calibur, Same for Star Ocean the Last Hope,  Same for Beautifull Katamari, same for the latest Silent Hill games, same for Final Fantasy XIII, Same for Dead Or alive 4, Same for Virtua Fighter 5, Same for the latest Ace Combat, Same for devil May Cry 4, Same for the latest Castlevania, Same for the latest Sonic games, Same for Final Fantasy XIV, Same for Ridge Racer, and I could go on but when a reviewer doesn't give a good score to J-game it basically comes down that Western Reviewers are biased.  Their are simply not that many Japanese game franchises that got a sequel this generation that ended up better than his prequels... especially if you wouldn't count Nintendo games...    Without looking it up the only game franchises that improved (and that I remember) are so far Dynasty Warriors 7, Tales franchise (Tales of vesperia) and Metal Gears solid 4 (but that one depends who you ask I guess)

Final Fantasy XI was an awesome game. Most of the Final Fantasy fanbase is filled with morons who label it as shit because their too fucking cheap to spend $12.95 a month on it. Final Fantasy XIV flopped due to no advertising, bad team management, poor development, and other various issues. Learn your fucking facts before you spew shit.

We obviously played different Final Fantasy XIs. The one you played must be really cool for you to get so defensive about it.

Holy crap, he must really liked eleven

Does it surprise you? He also really liked VIII. Obviously he plays different versions than the rest of us

aah, now its making sense

gonna have to agree with this one, most of the games you listed are dead on, Except for Soul Calibur 4 IMHO is way better than 3, but not 2. Dont know about Star Ocean and VF5 isnt worse than 4, its just not better

based on brand. And FF is much more front loaded than any RPG game.

Why does COD outsell games like Halo and Killzone by millions? You want to explain that?

ME2 and FF13 are both equally disappointing

Sure, Japanese developers haven't exactly made the best games in their careers this generation, but a lot of flaws in Western games seem to get deliberately overlooked. When you have games getting high review scores, but also getting patches already upon release, then there's something fishy. This coupled with the fact that the same kind of disappointment can be found among fans of Western games too (like for example, Mass Effect being a step down from KotoR) makes it look like there is a double standard at play within the gaming media.

Are you sure you don't mean Dragon Age 2? Because I didn't saw a huge amount of complaining about Mass Effect 2.  Especially on Vgchartz, it is possible that I missed it.  Their are some complaints but that is like the people who complain about Persona 4.  Sure they prefered Mass Effect or Persona 3 but they still call it's sequel a great game.

I am not against patches because in 99% of the cases they are not really necessary or just add something in the game.  it is just that games like Fallout 3 new Vegas needed one that it feels like every game get released broken on the market, some j-games could use patches aswell they just stay broken (Tales of Graces is an obviously offender)

Yeah, I am sure that I meant ME vs. KotoR, but Dragon Age 2 is actually an even better example.

Anyway, I don't think this here will be going to lead anywhere, because we'll most likely just repeat how things look like based on our different perceptions of the situation. I suppose in the end it comes mostly down to personal preference: If you like Japanese games more, then it will look like Western games get a pass more often and more easily. If you prefer Western games, then probably everything is right in the world.

or even more simple,  Western Reviewers may look biased but what about famitsu? 9.75/10 for Final Fantasy XIII

I bought both, but I'm shamed that I contributed sales to mass effect 2, I should have learnt from mass effect 1. Now that I have sworn off bioware the mistake will never happen again. Its why you should never trust review scores over common sense (in relation to your own personal tastes)

Also, how about it being released for two platforms at same time in West, as opposed to Mass Effect 2 which showed up too late on the PS3?  Microsoft got behind marketing and pushing it as a title also.
