Forums - Sony - Media Molecule: Devs revenue obsession is depressing

"I find it quite depressing that you'd approach designing a game from a point of view of: 'How do we milk people?'," he tells us. "I wouldn't like to work in that kind of environment. When we work on things we're primarily trying to make things that amuse us, that we love.

"If I was to work on a game that was about trying to come up with this ultimate business model, or how to sell the most copies… if you spend two or three years of your life making something like that, and then it fails, what a fucking waste of your life.

"If you work on something that you love, and it fails, then you don't care because it's something that you're proud of."

Not everyone has the luxury of being a first party studio whose games rake it in from a shit ton in DLC.

he talks as if he knows its not both ways for them. You can be focused on profit and love your product.

im glad that they can critique themselves and realize that all their shitty useless DLC was just an attempt to milk their fans....oh wait...thats not what this is....o_O

That is one stupid comment. I gotta be honest. At the end of the day video games, just like everything else is a business and the purpose of every business is to become successful, generate revenue, and get as many fans / purchasers / users as possible.

The thing is you can do both. Are you telling me the guys who create Halo don't love their product? Of course they do and they also have planned out ways of selling millions upon million of copies. Same thing with COD. I guarantee you Infinity Ward is proud of their product.

This guys just sounds like he's trying to cater to people so they see him as an "artist" or some bull like that. Dude you do this for a liveing so you can make money. You can be proud as hell of a game but if it flops you better watch out cause your jobs on the line.

LOL, tell this at the guys from Sony Online Entertainment, you genius.

LOL...LBP probably has the most DLC this gen available, paying like $5-$7 dollars for about 3-5 costumes

Some people aren't motivated just by money, strange as it sounds, particularly today. While he does overdo the "art before food" angle, and with LBP perhaps being more profitable on DLC than games that sold 3 to 4 times as much I doubt the MM guys will be feeling hungry anytime soon, it is nonetheless a fair point overall in an industry where (as with the lowest points of Hollywood) commerce is seriously overtaking creative variation and the main push is for endless sequels.

He does come across overly superior though I think. I suspect a lot of devs would love to just do it for the love and the art but don't have the luxury.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Actually... yeah... good point.  Has there ever been a game with more DLC than this?

Rock Band and Guitar hero, definitly.
