As well as getting FPS games that may follow in MAGs footsteps I picture several series getting MMO elements added to them as options, like a Elder Scrolls with a small online HUB world/city which is the MMO part, then you break away in small parties for the adventuring parts, football games getting HUB stadiums where the userbase interacts and can set up matches from. Things going much more social by adding pseudo-MMO parts to them, while some genres can go the whole way much easier others will be limited. Racing is another genre that could buff up the racer count, sandbox games would work too for a HUB world. |
So far it sounds like Wii U's online would be better for a MMOs.
With the freedom they are getting, devs can offer their own unique pay service rather than making MMOs basically unworkable as MS has done.
They can release free content whenever they want like on PCs instead of mandating a cash price like MS does.
A flexible online system like what Nintendo are trying to offer leaves space for MMOs to be done better on consoles.
i'm not talking about online HUB games like MAG where all the players don't even really play together in the same match and the elder scrolls example is similar to how MH3 is on Wii.
I mean large online seamless persistent worlds .
genreless imo, or maybe more accurate all genres.
my gut tells me the barriers between genres will break down greatly. games will be able to transition between first and third person views seemlessly with gun and swordplay, you'll be able to drive vehicles ground and air based, platform around the world, all while incorporating some sort of an RPG leveling system. oh, and there will of course be puzzle mini games for select tasks like lock picking or whatever. ...all with traditional controller or motion controller input options.
in short gameplay in a single game will try to become more varied to the point all or most genres are incorporated in every game.

You pointed out the flaw in your own logic. RPGs are bigger than ever, it's just they are now on portables.
geez so many answers and I don't see the right one:
Rythm games!
like just dance and zumba fitness.. stop denying it!!

yeah, but I want them to migrate back the home consoles.
I'd say the last two gens were pretty balanced. Especially last gen. GTA may have been the highest seller but I wouldn't say it's genre dominated. It just meant that GTA dominated. And sandbox games definitely weren't releasing like crazy like FPS's are this year. 5th gen, everything was pretty balanced as well.
With that said, I'd say FPS will still be pretty dominent but console hardware will finally allow some decent MMO's which could be big. I remember SONY pushing for them this gen but hardware restraints likely got in the way. There was also a push for MMO's on 360 but by the devs of MMO's. Sadly, MS's restrictions on XBL didn't work well with what devs want. Online is huge now so I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 publishers pushed to make online games of all kinds generally more easier to get out there on consoles.
4 ≈ One
Obivously FPS again.. Well except for Wii U, which will be mainly party games, platformers.
Just to give people some context, here are the top selling games of this gen, by genre. I'll put a * next to portables, because the OP listed home consoles only.
Sports
Arcade
Racing

*Platformer

That covers the first page. Shooters do have a sizeable number, but they're all fairly low down. Shooters did not dominate this gen.
