Forums - Gaming - What will be the dominant Genre for the next generation (Nextbox, PS4, WiiU)

Looking among the 36 90+ rated 360 games

There are 6 FPS: Bioshock, Orange Box, COD4, MW2, Halo 3 and Halo Reach

Then counting other games with big shooting elements like puzzle games (Portal, Geometry Wars), RPGs (Mass Effect, Fallout), TPS (Gears, Ghost Recon), Sandbox (Rockstar), Survival Horror (Dead Space) I've counted 13 more "shooters"

Well yes, but no-one has ever questioned that, in the eyes of reviewers, FPS is dominant. In terms of what is dominant, the only possible metric is sales.

I love that a puzzle game is counted as 1.2 shooters in your count :P Hey, why not add Mario Kart to the list of shooters this gen - you are shooting turtle shells at other players, who are trying to hit you with shells - that is closer to a shooter than Portal. If you broaden the genre enough that you create a genre encompassing; shooters, puzzle, racing, RPG, survival horror and arcade (ie what you just did) then yes, that genre is dominant. if it makes you happy to refer to this super genre as 'shooter' then feel free to, just don't expect anyone else to share your opinion.

@ zarx - I didn't forget to combine the multiplat sales. I deliberately avoided it in order to ensure that the data coming out was fair. The main reason for this, is because of the lack of distinction between similar games (ie Mario and Sonic on Ds and Wii) and Multiplat games (ie CoD4 on PS360WiiDSiphonePSP). There is a lot more similarity between Mario and Sonic on Wii/DS than there is between Cod4 on PS360 and iphone. There is no way to draw those lines up without bias, so I figured the only fair thing to do is count all games as seperate. Regardless, I have just now thought of a better idea. See below.

Console FPS Sales Platformer Sales RPG Sales Racer Sales
PS3 71.63 15.34 24.66 42.15
360 124.09 9.21 39.8 43.43
Wii 14.14 69.22 8.68 47.56
Home Console Total 209.86 93.77 73.14 133.14
PSP 9.34 16.09 37.51 31.09
DS 3.53 71.4 118.66 34.29
Handheld Total 12.87 87.49 156.17 65.38
Grand total 222.73 181.26 229.31 198.52

This is pretty complete data, missing only three things

*PC data, which would be FPS heavy

*XBLA/PSN/WW/VC/smartphone data, which would be platformer heavy

*and the data VGChartz itself is missing.

So yes, in terms of sales on home consoles, shooters do have a fair lead on the competiton. Overall this gen, the winner is RPG's

For anyone interested enough (I probably should get back to work) I would be interested to see a comparison of this gen's data for

FPS without CoD

Platformers without Mario

RPGs without pokemon

Racers without mario kart
