I also agree with 2001. It was a time where although the PS2 was around, everyone I know was still cranking N64/PS/Dreamcast games all day long.
From 98-01 we had GTA3 blowing up, WWF No Mercy, Power Stone 2, Jet Set Radio, Marvel v Capcom 2, Goldeneye, Forsaken, Syphon Filter, Driver 2, Killer Instinct Gold, Legend of Dragoon, Automobili Lamborghini (LATE 97) Winback, StarFox, Pokemon Gold/Silver...
I still say those 4 years (98,99,00,01) beat the pants off most games released in the last 4 years...mainly because I have played them all endlessly. With all those games available due to backlog in 2001, it was definitely the best time.

Yes, jsut checked. Secret of Mana and Illusion of Gaia were 1993, Chrono Trigger and Terranigma 1995. So 1994 was an excellent year, but nothing special back then... |
Super Mario Kart was also 1992

2003 was still a good year
Two of my favorite handheld games of all time were released that year.

But with '98 bringing Zelda (I sold my N64 in mid '97 and didn't buy another until X-Mas '99) and MGS, I may change my belief. I still remember seeing the back to back Platinum Awards in EGM. No game had ever gotten a perfect score until MGS. The very next month, it happened again! |
I agree with you for the most part. OOT was good but I feel overrated, but Majora's Mask did make me happy, along with Xenogears, RE2 and definitely MGS. However DMC made me shit my pants when I first played it (there was nothing like it back then), Halo was one of the first proper console FPS, ZOE impressed me and truly showed what the PS2 could do even though it was an early gen game. I think the Pokemon craze in 98 is what kills that year being the best year to be a gamer for me rofl, I truly felt back then and still today that it is a subpar rpg with too much rock paper scissor effects, and I simply borrowed it but instead I bought Golden Sun around those years, now THAT was a win game.
Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)
I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/ hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.
Saying X year was the best in gaming is purely opinionated as evident through the responses in this topic. Rather, I would say that 1998 was one of the most revolutionary years in gaming. Most modern gaming now is a result of games that launched in 1998. Of course, it is not THE most revolutionary year, but it is a very important year because it's tough to beat the introductions of Pokemon, MGS, OoT and Half Life to the gaming world.
