This article defeated itself. It characterized winning the hardcore over as the goal of E3, where nothing could be further from the truth.

Right, because loads of casual gamers watch E3.

Winning over hardcore gamers is the point of the show.

That's crap.

Casual gamers watch mainstream media, with E3 being one of the few times the mainstream media pays attention to the gaming industry.

As an example, the Washington Post has carried numerous articles on E3.

Only really new hardware and maybe the occasional enormous new game announcement. I wouldn't expect to see a Washington Post article titled "Sony shows new Uncharted 3 footage" or "Microsoft Details Star Wars Kinect".

Game media, on the other hand, covers all of this, and quite a few more devoted gamers watch the conferences live, or recorded.

You mean like this one?

Microsoft's entire focus was Kinect, exactly what the mainstream media is interested in.

Game media covers all of this ALL THE TIME, YEAR ROUND.  Precisely why there was virtually nothing from any console maker's conference that gamers everywhere didn't already know about.
