What's so bad about only one WiiU controller? I like the fact that I don’t have to buy new tablets and can just use my gear from the last generation. I’d love to have been able to use my ps2 controller for my ps3 or my original Xbox pads for my 360 but I can’t. I had to buy all new $50 controllers for each console. Now you’re telling me you guys want to abandon all your perfectly good remotes from last generation to buy WiiU controllers. Your wallets must be gluttons for punishment or something. One of the things I love about the Wii was the GC ports it had. When Brawl was released I still had my good GC game pads and was able to bust them out for when I had my game parties. Parents who will upgrade from Wii to WiiU won’t want to spend another $250 just to have multiplayer and no one else should will either.

How much money Wii gamers spent on Wii peripherals to only throw them out with the next generation would only make parents upset with Nintendo.

Would the multiplayer experience benefit?

I mean if you think about it what's the definition of the hardcore experience nowadays? Is it sitting with a group of friends in your living room playing split multiplayer on one screen? Not anymore it is. The hardcore mostly play on one TV while their friends are on a separate console miles away or even on separate continent. Online play is supposed to be the future of multiplayer gaming isn't it.

The hardcore was knocking the Wii for being so family oriented so now Nintendo makes a new system that is all about “U” the individual and the hardcore are knocking it down again. When my roommate plays halo there isn't four people on the 360 at once there's only one guy with his headset on sitting in the dark.

Most of my best gaming experiences on my ps3 and 360 have been me by myself full absorbed in the single player game or by myself with online multiplayer. Is that not true for you as well? Of course I enjoyed my gaming experiences with my Wii as well but even with that system most of my games are made for the single player experience not the local multiplayer experience. All my local multiplayer games are essentially party games like Wii party, Mario party, rayman raving rabbits, wario ware, Dance dance revolution, Wii sports resort. All these games would benefit little from another wiiu controller hence Nintendo keeping the old Wii controllers in place. Or do you guys really think you'd need four wiiu pads to get a better experience from shallow party games.

Four sword adventures is the only game I could see you effectively using more than one controller for but are games like that really needed? How often will you get three of your buddies together to play a 30+ hour adventure game. I can barely get all my pals to get together to play a game of halo online at the same time let alone in the same room long enough to complete an adventure game. It would take me and my friends months to complete even a 10 hour game if we had to do it together. There would be a miniscule amount of people who would actually beat a game like that.

Now don’t get me wrong I am no way sold on the WiiU. If the graphics aren’t where I want them to be or if the games aren’t able to fully utilize the touchpad effectively I will wait for the next xbox and the PS4.

great point, but don't get your last part

if graphics are not where you want them to be you'll move onto ps4/720? how are you enjoying ps3/360 games right now? thsoe graphics shoudl not be where you want them to be either

If the graphic don't make at least a mildly noticeable upgrade from the current gen to the WiiU then there's no real need for me to jump onto the WiiU at launch. The same reason I wasn't sold on 360 till they really started improve the graphics a year or two in.

The problem is that WiiU is aiming for both "casual" and "core", they said they wanted to blur the inexisting lines between these gamer categories. So when they showed of the single U controller, the Wii market wonders why is multiplayer turned off for this controller. The five player gameplay shows a hybrid between Wii and U, it's interesting but we'd like more than one to experience the U controller. That's why we want at least co-op for WiiU (and when this happens, start calling it the Nintendo Us).

If you want more than one WiiU pad then you probably need a 500 dollar piece of hardware to be able to stream HD video to all 4 pads. Or they'd reduce the quality of the stream to maybe only 480P or something.

I agree with the latter, seen side-by-side 3D movies and the image looked fine. Don't have a clue how the streaming works here or how much power is needed to show all these independent screens. Assume they take the 1080p screen realstate and split it, then each controller gets the feed and zooms to their appropiate section:

  • For two controllers, one half goes for the TV and the other half is divided between the two controllers.
  • The four controller setup can simple be divided into four, with nothing on the TV.
For my needs, I like the two controller setup the best, but I can see why someone might like the other.

Despite the fact that the new controller doesn't attract me, it's ridiculous for a console to not allow multiple of its own controllers.

The wii motes are part of it's controller set. Just think of the wiimotes as the real WiiU controller and the touch pad as a mandatory peripheral. Nobody needed two balance boards and you don't need two touchpads especially when we know they'd probably cost more than 100 a piece. How many controllers do you actually have for your ps3 or 360? I'm guessing probably two at the most. None of my friends have more then two because everyone plays online nowadays. I bet most of your multiplayer gaming is online as well. Outside of party games how often do you need to break out more than one or two controllers. I only get to use all four of my wiimotes maybe 3 or 4 times a year and frankly I regret I bought so many of them since I don't use them frequently.
