Forums - Nintendo - Wii 'U'nder powered?

Aiddon said:
ummmmm...no. MS and Sony aren't going to even think about releasing their systems for at least another three years. By the time the successors to the XBox and PS line come out more than likely Nintendo is probably going to have THEIR next console up. I also don't expect a gigantic upgrade when the new tech comes out

I think MS will might prove you wrong.

I get your argument, but there's not so much market share left for Nintendo then... Honestly, I would rather buy a 360 or PS3 if its much cheaper than the Wii U since most of the games will be similar. Of course Nintendo's lure is always its fantastic IP's.

By next year many of us will be ready for a next gen console. However, personally I don't want to pay for a brand new console only to have many of its games look worse than Uncharted 3 etc. al.

A new generation of consoles are meant to make the previous gen look bad, so it will leave me feeling rather empty if my 5 year old console pumps out better looking games than my brand new Wii U.

Granted, specs haven't been released for Wii U yet, and we haven't seen enough to judge its power by. But the rumours point to it being a little more powerful than PS3.

Do any of you find this as ridiculous and deal-breaking as me? I know graphics aren't everything and the Wii U might end up 5xPS3 (hopefully), but with a new generation I want new levels of visuals.

Just try to make a PC with worse graphical capabilities than the PS3 or 360, I dare you... Especially by next year, even ridiculously cheap components will be significantly more powerful than the PS3 or 360 which have really underpowered GPUs compared to modern ones.

Plus, the next generation of Sony/MS consoles will likely be cheaper to make than PS3 or 360 were when they launched, so don't expect a big leap in graphics from any console. The PS3->PS4 leap will likely be smaller than the PS2->PS3 leap.

''even ridiculously cheap components will be significantly more powerful than the PS3 or 360''

Exactly! That's exactly why I'm disapointed with the rumours of Wii U's specs...

''Plus, the next generation of Sony/MS consoles will likely be cheaper to make than PS3 or 360 were when they launched, so don't expect a big leap in graphics from any console. The PS3->PS4 leap will likely be smaller than the PS2->PS3 leap.''

I don't get the 'Plus'. Your two paragraphs do not seem to be complimentary. I get your point in the second paragraph though, and its true that many, many agree with you. I however do not. I see no reason why the next gen of consoles won't offer a significant leap in graphics. Otherwise, what will be the point of the next gen?

1.What specs rumors are you talking about exactly? Every rumor I've seen is very vague regarding the GPU (they typically refer to a generation of GPUs which includes low-end to high-end components and everything in between).

2.The main reason why I don't believe MS/Sony will offer a huge graphical leap is that they've had huge problems with this gen's graphical leap. They will not want to put expensive or very hot (as in temperature) components in the new consoles due to "$599 U.S. dollars" and the "RROD". Expensive hardware is simply not working out well for them in terms of profits.

3.PS: Regarding the "plus" I may have been confusing this thread with another so just ignore that.

1. You are right, everything has been vague, very vague. Considering the tech demos on display and what I've heard all over the place it seems to be in the PS3 range. This is just conjecture at this point, but I have no reason to believe otherwise.

2. I do see your point here. And while they might not push it as far as in that gen, we have to consider that these consoles launched AGES ago and the pocketsize PSV is almost as powerful as PS3. While they might not put bleeding-edge tech in the next gen, I am certain it will be impressive.

3. No worries! Worst thing is when people get all angry. I once quoted the wrong person while having a conversation with someone else ( I mean who seriously keeps checking the names of who their talking to and quoting whilst forum hopping!?), and the guy COMPLETELY freaked out and told me to stop accusing him of things he didn't say and that I'm a stupid idiot bla bla...

So don't buy it and in the mean time you can try to not create inflammatory posts based on rumors.

Thank you, good sir.

Nothing this gen has convinced me that we're hitting a ceiling. There's no POINT releasing a new system for SONY and MS, especially how the economy is. It's ASININE to think you're going to see HD twins getting successors before 2014. No, those two are going to burn a little while longer, PERIOD

if graphics are really that important to you then follow these steps

1 - Save up ,
2 - Get a PC
3 - buy any game
4 - have a graphicgasm
5 - forget you own consoles

The cost and heat were a problem when they were making a massive leap after just 4-6 years between consoles. With this generation looking to last another 2 years before MS and Sony are going to launch their next consoles we are looking at a 7-8 year gap, combine that with the recent push towards mobile devices and SOC designs by both Nvidia and AMD both of which require an increased focus on performance per watt and lowering the heat and size of proccesors the next generation should be a massive increase in power. And Sony have shown with the aparent loss they expect to take on the Vita hardware for the first 3 years they are still willing to take a loss on the hardware.

Not to mention Nvidia expect to have GPUs that offer 32x the performance per watt over the PS3's GPU by 2013 even if they miss that target that is still likely to be over 16x more powerful GPU in the PS4 over the PS3, add in lots of cheap fast RAM and you should see a massive jump as per usual.

As for the cost of development the ability to use more dynamic real time effects and tessalation for model defimation plus procedural generated content should actually lead to lower costs for the next generation. Afterall graphics aren't actually the biggest factor in increased costs this generation, the amount and quality of voice acting and music have a lot to answer for in that area.

Thank your for contributing  nothing to a topic that actually matters to me. I didn't find this discussion anywhere so I made a thread. If you have a problem with that then I would kindly ask you to not take part in my thread since it wasn't meant to enrage anyone. Just see the discussions above, they seem sensible enough to me.

This isn't possible financially. Also, the consoles see the games I am interested in and I'm not willing to wait ages for games that take advantage of my expensive graphics card.

Also, I've been suitably impressed with the graphics of this gen, and the main point is that I'd like to be impressed again next gen - which is why I'm not so enthusiastic if the Wii U ends up looking like PS3 most of the time... Get my point?

Some good points, which is why I put a *might* in my comment.

Looking back at last gen though, MS rushed in with the 360 to secure market share. Also, they have not been shy at all about pushing massive capital behind their console to ensure it being extremely powerful. Just look at the juggernaut that was the original Xbox, and the fact that 360 launched way before the super expensive PS3 yet still keeps up graphically.

While all of you could be correct and it could be in MS best interest to make some money off the 360 for a while, I strongly feel we've all forgotten what an incredibly aggressive machine the MS Xbox division has been up to now.

EDIT: I think the RAM limitations in the 360 and the PS3 are really giving devs a massive headache. If only they had put about 2Gig in each then I would agree with you more...

Finally someone that agrees with me and is able to back it up with good arguments

Please remind me of this thread when the next gen comes out and blows the current gen out of the water.

EDIT: Always fun to say 'I told you so'... hehe
