Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Video Comparison : Metal Gear Solid 3DS vs. PS2

I honestly don't get it, the demo shown off at E3 last year looked really crisp even though the video I saw was with 3D turned on. That's rather odd and I hope that's just a placeholder intro since the game is still some months off.

Though one thing to note guys and I can never stress this enough, the PS2 game maxed out a dual layer DVD, thus not having to compress textures and sound like they are on the 3DS with it's current 2GB limit (though will probably be 4GB by the time the game hits), if the 8GB 3DS cart was already in use I'd be the first one bitching about how this is a shoddy port but realistically I know they're compressing data here. Before someone brings up PSP! The PSP games had a lot of compressed data too and it was a bit smaller in length and scale to work around the 1.6GB limit of the UMD.

Basically I think the E3 demo last year was what they could potentially do cause in those demos they could have easily had completely uncompressed data on those demo carts, thus the place holder images that was supposed to be projected graphics fidelity was accurate, when the project went further and they had data limitations I'm guessing they scaled back some, still I think between now and release we could see some more optimization happen.

My only issue with that is the PS2 didn't have a texture compression scheme like Nintendo consoles use (S3TC).  The 3DS can handle up to a 6:1 texture compression with no loss in quality.  There is also the fact tha the 3DS has a lower overall resolution than the PS2's resolution for MGS3.  Throw in the drop in audio channels and audio quality and overall you simply don't need as much space for the game.

And for the record, it's a single layer disc on the PS2.  Not dual layered.  MGS2 was dual layered though.

Well done Kojima, you put more effort into a PSP game, than a more powerful system.

I wonder why they decied to re add the blur filter from the PS2 game sure it hides the jaggies but you lose so much detail...

Ahh I guess I got those two mixed up, just looked up the ISO for MGS3 and it is indeed single layer.  So that blows my theory out of the water.

Uh basically they need to optimize something or they've got a screw or two loose somewhere with this development.

looks to me that the problem is that they are trying to replicate the PS2 version as closely as possible rather than playing to the 3DS's strengths. Trying to get a game that was heavaly optimised for one platform with it's strengths and weaknesses and then trying to make it look the same on a totaly different platform with it's own strengths and weaknesses is no easy feat.

2 Other factors also come to find.

1. Kojima recently tweeted that 1 years worth of work was just shut down the drain. No one really know what that meant but it's possible it relates to the differences we're seeing in the game here.

2. Konami recently announced the HD collection for MGS. Was some of the team responsible for the 3DS MGS3 moved over to the HD collection and/or is it possible they wanted the HD collection to look as best as possible against the 3DS version to increase sales on the platform better known for MGS games?

That sounds entirely plausible to me given how things go with Nintendo and third parties...

@roma im sorry man i dont buy it. MGS3d looked just as good last year and i trust Kojima and his boys alot more than the RE team, but for all our sakes i hope the end product looks that good

I can’t believe how blind some people are :O the difference between last year and this years build are very different.

Anyway whatever videos are out there to prove my point

And the graphics of mercenaries prove that RE revelations are possible and that game is out already sheesh >.>

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Absolutely appalling compared to the original demonstration. This game was one of the technical showcases for the system, and now they give us something that would look more at home on hardware I can buy for a buck-fifty and a hearty handshake.

What the Hell happened here?

I like to think that Konami is giving an honest effort but really they pretty much are a Sony 2nd party developer. Why should we really expect anything with effort from them on a Nintendo console at this point in time? Capcom should be getting far more support and attention from Nintendo 3DS owners. Effort from them is clearly there. Forget Konami when it comes to Nintendo systems is how I feel at the moment. MGS3: 3D isn't getting purchases by unless it improves between now and release. We know what can be done on the 3DS this early on.

I'm not a graphics first guy but there is a level of acceptability I have in context of what a device is capable. PS2 level graphics on what is pretty much GameCube tech at the least is unacceptable. Rush DS to 3DS ports as launch games are somewhat acceptable but stop being so after the launch window. Which is why I'm ignoring Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor as a 3DS game. As a DS game, at a DS game price it would be okay.

If MGS3: 3D stays the same I really hope people do not buy it. I doubt they care about the 3DS game anyway but instead the HD collection that will come out at the same time. That's where the effort is clearly going. Don't be surprised if the 3DS game was outsourced as well.

Meh I’m boycotting Konami until they show me that they are serious about support. I was really looking foreword to this game but not anymore. I mean who the hell do they think we are? You can’t just throw crap at us and expect us to grab it! (not saying that the game is crap but it was not what they showed but it was going to be)
