So... what exactly is the difference between standard and high-definition? What does it matter?

Less jaggies in high definition. If you constantly see jagged edges in a game, you can't enjoy it. It's just not possible.

Well, in Smash Bros. Brawl, there is a deflicker option, and if it's off, the graphics are sharper, but more jagged. If it is on, the graphics are smoother but a little blurry. In high definition, would you be able to get both sharp and smooth, but not sacrifice anything?

sorry... Im kind of a noob when it comes to high definition. I only have Nintendo consoles :(

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I agree (apart the obvious exaggeration), and believe it or not even non-gamers notice these. It's one of the first things my brothers noticed when I was playing TP on the Wii.

They also notice low framerates. Have anyone play Mario Kart at 60 fps and then 30 fps (online splitscreen uses 30 fps) and see their reaction...

High fidelity is not a term that applies here. It applies 100% strictly to audio.

The term you're looking for is "high definition".

It's true LTNK, sadly there's no stoppin it. PC has been on a fury to best itself graphically almost since inception. The obsession with high graphics has existed for so long, but I've never encouraged it, especially when it leads to shallow experiences.

No, loads of developers finally spending themselves into bankruptcy will stop it. Unless that is what you meant.

You may be right, I haven't been in the future yet, so I can't tell ya. Then again maybe not because it's been going on for the longest time, and some companies are still thriving on it, with content like Avataar 3D, the Incredibles, and other high-end graphics (movies), and Call of Duty, Halo, Uncharted (games). But again, I don't know the future.

Now if I'm faithful to our chat, and you mean specifically companies who make junk content and just make fancy graphics, than boy I think, and certainly hope you're right. The obsession with High Fidelity graphics should go so far as it can facilitate creativity and open the door for inspiration. As a hardware developer, that obsession is very understandable and for the most part legitimate. As a software developer, it is only legitimate insofar as it breaths more beauty into the game. Another example of a game that would very much enjoy more of it is Prince or Persia for instance.

@gumby You rock! If there's one thing I hate guys, it's knowing what I'll find in a game. Thanks for not spoiling :)

People that know what they are doing are of course the exception. Pixar has long been about strong storytelling, while Michael Bay, as much as I like a lot of his movies, are often about the flash.

As for gaming, the Dragon Quest team has been very consistent with content over graphics (although Level 5 has been very helpful in the latter for the last few games), and having their sales be consistent over the years is a testament to that.

Yeah, I think we agree. I like PIxar too, they do tell good stories, and are witty I like their humour too.

DQ sales are definitely consistent! Not sure if that has to do with graphics more than just being always faithful to the staples of the series (it's a very traditional game, in that it very rarely breaks the rules of what makes a DQ, at least that's what I understood). Now again if I'm faithful to your point, since keeping the tradition is a thing of content, yes you're right there. I think the principle is more "Not graphics over content", but there I'm probably just being picky as both are roughly the same thing, I just find the second is more descriptive (though maybe less "wordable" hehe).

I have a really strained metaphor, but a game is a sundae, where content is the three scoops of ice cream, gameplay is the spoon, and graphics is the whip cream and cherry. Too much focus on graphics means a mutant, giant cherry filled with whipped cream, and we're getting fewer ice cream scoops.

Dude, your metaphore is sublime, and so true :) I love it. But what happens when you eat the sunday with no spoon? :)

If you just look at it, then that would be a cut scene. If you meant eating it with your hands or something else, that would be broken controls or gameplay that is overly complex.

when it comes down to it, I'll take polish over 'high fidelity' any day of the week. And the truth is of course that it takes much more effort to polish a PS3/360 game than a PS2/Wii game.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Yeah, that's basically what the people who made FFXIII admitted.
