Forums - General - Why doesn't everyone go metric

Pfft. I would rather die than see the day the USA uses the metric system. USA>World.

We Americans came up with our own system so that we would have pointless conversion problems to keep our high-schoolers busy. Then we can give credit to the people who came up with the conversion formulas, so we can convert the pointless conversions, even though we know metric is better, but we just wanted to make our own people famous. That's how I see it.

I think metric is better, but it's not up to me, so it doesn't really matter.

Imperial measurement is an old British system (hence the "imperial" bit).

Actually the US doesn't use Imperial measurement.

It uses "United States Customary Measurements."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_customary_units

Potato, potahto.

Actually, and sadly, it makes a lot of difference in some cases.

The american gallon is different from the imperial gallon by about 20%, thus every software system for the management of air transportation that has to deal with the refuelling of aircrafts on both sides of the ocean will need to make conversions between metric and at least two kinds of gallons.

Even worse, since fuel density changes enough with temperature and aircraft fuel is generally sold by weight, but loaded in the tanks by volume, the software and accountancy system has to deal with Kilograms, pounds, litres, imperial gallon, american gallon. Plus currencies, which exchange rates vary in time.

That's a good deal of useless menial conversion work. Must be good for the economy :)

Yes that is true,  I believe that is the way oit is everywhere,  at least in the US

Well I mean that way they can say it's two quarter pund patties.

They can't reall say it's a half pound though cause it isn't combined after it's cooked.

Maybe i'm just throwing legaliese in where it doesn't belong though.

How could they not say its a Half pound burger when its 2 qurter pound patties?   Since all weight is measured before cooking it would be right saying it either way.   I was just saying why its called a Double Quarter Pounder.

What size TV/Computer Monitor do you have?

That's one thing I don't like about being in Japan, everything is metric. I always have to convert everything to make it easier to understand. I use Wii Fit? It only shows kilograms, time to bust out the calculator. What's the temperature? C? Fahrenheit is easier to understand. How far do I need to go? kilometers? Give me my miles! ;-p

Yeah, because having freezing at 0 and boiling at 100 is totally illogical.  If only they were at some random numbers instead.

On a more serious note, surely the US has already adopted some metric as it's currency is in demoniations of 100, so 100c = $1.  Rather than £1 = 12s and 12s = 12d as we had here in the U.K pre 1971.

If you go metric, you can use a larger number to describe your penis size.

Cause Americans then wouldn't know what a Quarter Pounder is anymore... Quarter Pounder >>> Metric system

mmmmm quater pounder,must eat now.

When you use a certain measurement for a certain time, you just get use to it.

http://blogs.howstuffworks.com/2010/08/05/its-the-science-dummy-why-americans-hate-the-metric-system/ ---link. America actually did try to go metric in the mid-70's,but it did'nt really last that long and it was repealed.
