Forums - General Discussion - Why doesn't everyone go metric

All the haten on other cultures inspired me to put up this video. I don't know how to make the video appear. If you can't laugh then you must be a really angry human.

The cost would be insane because nearly every road sign would have to be converted.

Well, you should've though of that before buying those signs in the first place, no? Ah, you Americans never think of the future!

Psh, they should change to American, it's obvious the best or why else would we use it?

Because you think it's called "American"?

We use it, it's called American.

What's the language you speak called?

Am'rcan!

Predictable answer. you guys really gotta stop having all these wars and invest more in your education system.

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

I'm American and I use crappy metrics as well as terrible "Imperial" so die.

Because it makes sense, and people don't like things that make sense.

Cause Americans then wouldn't know what a Quarter Pounder is anymore... Quarter Pounder >>> Metric system

That's a nice onehundredtwenty-five gram burger you have there.

I thought the American pound is something like 0.4536 kilogram, isn't it?

I was rounding up.

Rounding? That doesn't sound very "metric", to me.

Apparently there was ment to be a metric clock but never caught on.

They could just call it a Royale (with cheese).

But then that violates Republicanism. A Democrale, perhaps? Republicale? Libertale? Washingtale?

Agree with fayceless.

I just use the systems I was brought up with (ft and inches for height, centimetres and metres for length, miles for longer distances, stone and pounds for weight, litres for volume). And I don't see why people should be forced to change just for the sake of uniformity and neatness, though I do now see why it appeals to the EU; it's vaguely fascistic.

Pretty much this, except I've always used kilograms for weight.

175 centimetres just doesn't have the same ring as "5 foot 8". "Mile" is a lot easier to say than "kilometer".

But if you're doing a scientific calculation, I just have no idea how you can do that with inches and pounds. The equations don't even work unless you use SI units! How do you figure out density? Multiply the mass by 2.2 and then divide it by the volume over 2.54^3? Or I suppose you could use pounds per cubic inch, but that just sounds horribly wrong.

But think about it. You could have a quarter kilo burger!!

Actually that is pretty close to a quarter kilo burger,  That burger is a Double Quarter Pounder w/cheese,  the 2 patties  add up to about 230 grams.

Wouldn't a double quarter pounder be a half ponder?

Anyway, in that case 250g would be standard. So you can get a half kilo too.

But really, the metric system is much easier and makes much more sense than the imperial one, but I also understand that those that are used to something don't wanna change it, so my attitude towards this issue is officially "whatever".
