Going by your hypothesis (that the environment determines what people's preferences are), then someone growing up in a heteronormative environment, where people are indoctrinated with the ideea that they should only be attracted to people of the opposite sex, will only find people of the oppiste sex attractive (as the environment is what causes preference, at least that's what you said).
This would essentially apply to every aspect of a person's life (everyone would like the same food, the same drinks, the same books, the same music etc.). Reality obviously proves otherwise.

It's already been put to the test. Actually, the very existence of diversity (be it regarding sexual preference, food preference, music preference etc.) disproves your hypothesis.
