It's already been put to the test. Actually, the very existence of diversity (be it regarding sexual preference, food preference, music preference etc.) disproves your hypothesis.

I would say you are born neither gay nor straight but as you grown in life you are influenced not only by your feelings towards men or women but also society. From your experience in life and what you feel you like you will make choices to like men women or both, and as with all things in life circumstances may change one day, you may find you change your feelings towards men women or both.
