Going by your hypothesis (that the environment determines what people's preferences are), then someone growing up in a heteronormative environment, where people are indoctrinated with the ideea that they should only be attracted to people of the opposite sex, will only find people of the oppiste sex attractive (as the environment is what causes preference, at least that's what you said).
This would essentially apply to every aspect of a person's life (everyone would like the same food, the same drinks, the same books, the same music etc.). Reality obviously proves otherwise.

Homophobia is one of the few things in this world I can't stand. It's as bad as racism and sexism, and a lot more common.

A category created in the 19th century for the repression and the control of people's sexuality. It was mainly created so those that call themselves "heterosexuals" could gain power over those they labeled as "homosexual".
