Forums - Nintendo - IGN Builds their own Project Cafe console

Kind of a pointless exercise by IGN ...

The performance of the R700 is well known, and cross-platform games have typically had higher detailed models & textures while handling double the resolution and double the framerate of the HD consoles (on the higher-end R700 based cards). On top of this, with 2 to 3 years to customize the hardware it could end up with significantly different performance.

I just want to see are games, games with beautiful art style like The Wind Waker or the one for Skyward Sword in motion.

Yah I hate all the rumours. Nintendo will also be using customized chips so who knows how much power the Cafe will have. But it was cool to see IGN make the rumoured Cafe. I can't wait to see Nintendo's legit version.

Also Nintendo will get these parts so cheap its not funny. Though IGN's peice does re-assure me that the next Nintendo console will likely be the most expensive one built to date. I bet Nintendo will stick to their profitability strategy and Cafe will launch at a profit. So 450USD doesn't seem all that outrageous to me especially since 360 and PS3 both launched for higher prices then that.

Even if they used the rumored components, it would not have a BOM (Bill Of Materials) greater than $250.  I'm not tabulating in the contollers with HD screen since that seems so out there it's not worth speculating on yet.

If $450 is their target retail price, you can bet they are workign with a BOM of $350-$400 which would mean a console much more powerful than the rumored specs or possibly including those HD screen controllers.

Of course as I have said in other threads I am not believing any of the rumours or speculating on them. I myself think Nintendo will launch far superior hardware to this gen and I wouldn't be suprised if the end hardware ended up retailing for 450$ the amount IGN came up with.

As for the other baseless rumours like the screens on the controllers. I think we'll just have to wait and see what Nintendo announces. Though I must admit since DS rumours have always been incorrect. Nintendo innovates and is very tight lipped about their products I don't think they would have let the main controller design leak like this.

My prediction is that Nintendo will launch a truly next generation system. Setting the bar for Microsoft and Sony. I think next generation the three will be close enough to port titles back and fourth. I wouldn't be suprised to see a Nintendo system as expensive as 450$ or as little as 350$. I think Nintendo will launch the new hardware at a substantial profit.

But then again my predictions are simply my own, not based on rumours or speculation of rumours.

They should have used modded games to show the difference with larger texture packs in particular because they could easily take advantage of the extra RAM on project Cafe especially in comparison to both HD consoles which are both sorely lacking in that department. Im sure had they actually talked to PC fans they could have made a better job of that article...

yeah i kind of worry about wii getting left behind if they release such a weak console now for profit.  How much loss will 360/PS3 take to put a much more technolically superior console on the market 1-2 years later?  1GB of RAM, also, is definitely not enough for the Wii 2 to grow into.

This is said a lot, but why didn't the same thing happen this generation... Didn't the Xbox 360 launch one year earlier than the PS3? Has the hardware difference been that big? Or are we assuming that the Wii2 will only be slightly better than the HDready consoles?

That's it. Nintendo has always launched a powerful console with the exception of Wii. I don't see why they can't have a beast of a machine stand next to the Wii at retail. The Wii could retail for $100 and the new console for $300 or so.

They both will co-exist, it only just depends if there is a continuing software support for the Wii. Can the Wii survive with old software? It has done for most of this year so far... Nintendo/third-parties would only need to release some software during Q4.

Another scenario that could occur this coming generation is that either Microsoft or Sony chicken out of the hardware race and go for a profitable one leaving the other to bleed money on their razor.

I think its always a bit of a balancing act.

Personally I would buy a shit-expensive machine if it really has the power and software to wow me.

pretty interesting i mean i expect nintendo to get the parts for cheaper but still its a good comparison by ign. Though i expect it will be a bit stronger.

Looks alright. The difficulty is, these are multi-plat games, not designed for the new hardware. It's like running a PS2 game on the PS3 and comparing specs. Wait until E3, there we'll find out how Nintendo will go about things.

Also- $299 is a likely price, looking at how much the IGN one cost.
