SNES and Wii shouldn't be on the list, N64 should be. A consoles importance shouldn't be based around it's sales, it should be based on the influence it has on future generations. 1.Analogue controls, 2. 3D gaming, 3. Player splitscreen, 4. rumble pack, 5. handheld linking and coloured consoles are far more important than any of the things that the SNES or the Wii have brought us.

Oh, please.

1. Those were around during the Arcade days as well.

2. PCs had 3D games far before than that. And by going on the 3D craze, developers forgot that some gamers (read: a lot of gamers) abandoned the N64 because there were only 3D games.

3. There was already 2 players split screen, much earlier, so how is it so different to add 2 players more?

4. ZOMG, gaming will change forever because the control shakes!

5. Still to this day, I haven't seen any big impact because a handheld connects to a console.

The Wii isn't inportant because it introduced something new. In fact, it is important because it shows that there is:

1. much more for gaming to expand.

2. That developers were very stupid to abandon old schools games and just go to  Holywood 3D movie crazy games.

So either Nintendo are the least innovative console manufacturers because they use pre-existing ideas as their main selling points or they are the most innovative for setting the trend, you gotta choose one man, because you can't say that the N64 was this and that and then tell me the Wii is innovative even though it took it's main ideas directly from the Dreamcast, the arcade and the PS2.

I also think you might not be serious, if so, then just ignore my post.

No, Im pretty serious. It is because Nintendo thinks they have to always do something new in order to impress us is why they come with thinks like the 3DS's 3D, which actually changes nothing. It is because of inovative and creative ideas we get games like Zelda Spirit tracks (which was a poor Zelda) and Metroid OM. Nintendo should stick with the fundamentals of the series and add more content instead of adding new gimicks.

This thread is arguing what the most important Nintendo consoles are, not what you personally like the most. I think the Gamecube is one of the greatest consoles ever, but it definently doesn't deserve to be on a list of importance.

I also agree with the whole gimmick thing, Nintendo should just stick to making a good product, instead of a wonky product with a cool gimmick, but that isn't necessarily related to the thread.

indeed. agree for the cube !

Then you aren't saying things with things, because to Nintendo, N64 and GC were the least important consoles to them, as they almost lead them to ruin (what stopped it mostly was the healthy handheld line, but that now is doomed as well because the 3DS is a Gamecube like handheld).

Above: still the best game of the year.

I would have to disagree with the list in some areas. I think the top five most important (influential) Nintendo consoles are as follows.

#1. Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii changed gaming for ever targetting casuals and showing consumers we didn't need a standard controller. It changed the landscape of gaming ushering in an era of games we had never experianced before.

#2. NES, Nintendo's first home console was by far the second most influential console in gaming history not only Nintendo's own history. The NES brought gaming out of the great crash and helped it go mainstream.

#3. Game & Watch, many will give credit to the GameBoy. But the Game & Watch was the first handheld gaming unit that I know of. It would go on to inspire the GameBoy and later the Nintendo DS.

#4. N64, very close to third if not tied would be the N64. Sure the SNES had StarFox but the first truely 3D games came to the N64 which made 3D standard. The N64 influenced every single console from then onwards. Setting the standards.

#5. Virtual Boy, now many will laugh at me. But Virtual Boy lead to 3D in gaming the 3DS and even Nintendo's own internal plans. It also caused Nintendo to reach a reality check that you can't sell everything. Your not invincable. It changed Nintendo's marketing and buisness strategy from then on. It was a huge influence on modern and pre modern gaming!

Handheld's aren't really considered "consoles"... so for the top 5 I'd simply order the Nintendo consoles in this way...

5 GameCube

4 N64

3 Wii (ONLY because it helped propel Nintendo from dead last to the market leader in a single generation)

2 SNES

1 NES

I've lost track on what your trying to tell me, Nintendo don't matter, they like systems that make money, not systems that are considered 'important'. If the Wii came out as a generic console with a mediocre library and average design philosphies, but it sold 150 million units in just four years, you'd better believe that would be their favourtie console. Sales aren't a sign of importance.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

not disagree with the reason of the virtual boy but even with this, he don't deserve to be in the top 5...

It didn't say top ten consoles, or best consoles. It said most important and Virtual Boy was very important thats why I listed it as number 5.

handheld consoles are as much consoles as home consoles.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Well, it ceratinily wasn't important because of the motive you said it was, because they keep doing the same stupid things again and again.
