Forums - Sales - Malstrom: Why Project Cafe will fail

i think it will fail because it will be technically inferior to ps4/x720.

wii had the motion controls which substantially differentiated it to an extent where graphics didnt matter. Going by rumors so far project cafe doesnt have anything like that. i think the screen on the controller will add to costs but not add much to the gaming experience.

btw i wonder what nintendo must be thinking after reading that article.....

How about Nintendo not wanting to make money? Malstrom sort of criticises Nintendo for going hardcore. Perhaps they are not going hardcore but doing what they like to do which is story games thus doing exactly what the Malstrom article relayed Nintendo should do: create games they like (which would result in good games assuming Nintendo staff is healthy).

Nintendo's job is not to make games they enjoy creating; Nintendo's job is to create games that will reach as wide an audience as possible and be very accessible.

A developer embracing "his vision" is one of the worst things that could ever happen to a game (Other M). Videogames are not interactive stories, they are interactive games. The problem arises when they blur the line and force story into something in which it is not necessary.

Nintendo's job is to make money, and the best way they can do this is by what you said. planetLars, they are a public company with shareholders; if the directors ever admitted their goal was not to make the most profit possible they would be immediately fired and replaced. Yes, even Iwata.

Yes Malstrom entire opinion on the 3DS, and Nintendo next console comes from his opinion. That Nintendo will not will not release games like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and Wii Play a game he believe is great?!

Since 3DS 1 month after it launch has no 2D Super Mario Bros game, and the first one will be 3D. He uses words like arcade values, but if he actually played the games. He would know that Steel Diver, Ridge Racer, and Street Fighter are arcade games. Their problem is they are ports, and in some cases missing content. Ridger Racer would be perfect if it had online! Then the price of the system , and reports of bad battery life.

So for Nintendo to change his mind they need to launch their next console with a New Super Marios Bro 2D game.

Which they undoubtedly will. Remember it took until about 18 months for DS to see NSMB. If 3DS doesn't see one by holiday 2012, then we can talk

I can't quite agree with this. NSMB was made at a time when NIntendo had completely abandoned 2D Mario, because they thought it is a thing of the past for the longest time. Today, it's not even a question if 2D Mario can still sell or if it is the most reliable killer application in Nintendo's portfolio. With that knowledge in mind, you would launch every new system with such a game to get it off the ground easily. Then about three years later you release a sequel on the same system for added effect. This really is a no-brainer.

But is it best to hit with your heaviest hitter right off the bat? That's the question. Nintendo's trying a much more passive strategy with 3DS, and it's viability remains to be seen, but the lack of NSMB at launch is not immediately damning nor indicative of their overall plan. NSMBWii was almost perfectly timed to fix Wii's situation in fall of 2009 (though that was probably by accident rather than by design) and Nintendo doubtlessly took notes from that, and have probably taken notes from the fact that an audience is hungrier for software earlier on, hence the attempt to front-load with spinoffs and lesser works.

Plus there's Mario Kart which will definitely be there by this holiday. That should certainly solve some problems

Derailing the thread a bit, but Mr Khan, let me ask...do you find it comfortable playing 2D games on the 3DS?...I haven´t tried it yet but I wonder because of the position of the D pad...is the slide pad good to play a 2D game?

Since we´re talking about Nintendo releasing a 2D Mario, I wonder if many of the people who bought NSMB for the DS will find it uncomfortable to play (the inevitable?) 2D Mario for the 3DS.

Or is there no difference, really?

The slide pad blows for 2D games, but I would say the same about every analog stick. The position of the d-pad makes it kinda hard to press left/up and left/down, but otherwise it's not too bad. I don't think it's going to make a 2D Mario play awkwardly as those two directions are the ones you will need by far the least over the course of the game. It also gets better the longer you play with the d-pad.

Still, playing 2D games on the 3DS isn´t gonna be as good as it is on the DS...I just cringe at the possibility the Castlevania title that´s in the works for the 3DS ends up being a 3D game -_-

Those two things have nothing to do with each other.

I know haha..it´s just a concern I was reminded of due to this conversation about 2D and 3D games and I felt like saying it.

I personally haven't had too much of an issue with it. The d-pad feels smaller, but i'm used to the DS Phat's honking great d-pad, and the slider isn't too bad, just that it is somewhat imprecise if you want to go immediately from going right to going left, or from up to down, or something like that. Like in Pokemon White with the thin walking rails i switch back to the d-pad, but use the slider for general navigation

Baffled by Malstrom's assertion that the PSP is selling better than the 3DS. It isn't and only did so for a couple of weeks in a single region. March is an unusual launch time as far as I'm aware. I think we'll see at Christmas how well this strategy has worked.
