I personally haven't had too much of an issue with it. The d-pad feels smaller, but i'm used to the DS Phat's honking great d-pad, and the slider isn't too bad, just that it is somewhat imprecise if you want to go immediately from going right to going left, or from up to down, or something like that. Like in Pokemon White with the thin walking rails i switch back to the d-pad, but use the slider for general navigation
