I'm sure most of you are familiar with TheGUNNShop, possibly the most well known gamer on youtube. He is also very well respected by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo fans.  Here is what he had to say about Nintendo's upcoming system.

Horse Power never decides a generation

Even the 360 outselling the first Xbox was due to games people wanted, not the horsepower.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

ever since the huge success from DS & Wii, nintendo knows that they doesn't need for highest spec hardware but new way of gameplay style is how they sell their systems...

Which is why it would be best for mainstream acceptance for someting that pisses developers off (since they still think specs are what the public wants, even the slice they have of gamers), even though the specs mean they have no excuses anymore.

"THQ stated that a big budget next gen game would cost around 100$ at retail they said it would cost almost double to develop over the current generation."

This is why the graphics race has to stop. They aren't making the games better (the good games are due to talent, not waving their specs around), and the sales have NOT risen this generation to match the increased cost over last generation.

Graphics should not affect development ability or cost. Its the hardware itself. The 360 uses simple tech compared to the PS3, which is why PS3 games still cost more to develop for and its cheaper to make the PS3 game the main platform and port over to the 360 versus the otherway around. Creation of higher quality textures and graphics might take a fraction longer, but the cost of making textures in Photoshop is the exact same no matter if your making an SNES game or a PlayStation 9 game.

LOL WUT. Do you know anything about programming and developing at all!?

do you? I've been a web developer since I was 7, and game development is very similar to web development in many ways. In both fields you; need to know what your making for the client; know how to program it; know how to create visuals; know how to put it all together; test functionality and compatibility with platforms; fix bugs and retest; release product; fix bugs that arise post-release.

Programming is done by code called C , OpenGL, and several others.

Graphics in general are skin textures, wall textures, 3D objects, and random other things that have been developed for years and created using Photoshop, Maya, and several others. Yes increase in power allows for better looking graphics because you can create larger objects with more depth to internal structure. A Xbox/PC game back in the day should have been harder to create than now due to less functional tools to create certain textures, but with Photoshop CS5, newer 3D modeliong tools, and such it should be a lot easier since there are more advanced tools that allow for better looking things in the same amount of time.

Now things like fire, smoke, ragdoll animation, lighting, and other things come under programming, more specifically physics programming which takes animation or textures created by the graphics team and coded to work in a game. While code has advanced to be more complex, once learned at the beginning of a generation it becomes easier and less time consuming.

The one thing that majorly affects costs overall is understanding. If you have a programming team that are still learning a platform costs will rise as they discover how to actually make things function.

Yes I do know something about programming.

You are right in saying that costs come down as a developer familiarizes itself with new hardware. Sure. But you saying this is just a self-defeating argument isn't it? You see, you implicitly state therein that new hardware raises programming costs.

Oh, and being a web developer is nothing like being an actual programmer. Sorry for bursting your bubble. The proof of that is that no-one can start programming, C,C , C sharp, Java etc. when they are 7 y/o.

While I do agree with his conclusion (the Wii-2 is a joke), I don't agree with how he got there...namely "it's a joke BECAUSE the graphics card is outdated"

Uhm, no? last I checked the PS1 was the weakest of that gen, and PS2 was weakest of its gen, and Wii was weakest of that gen, and those were the best selling consoles of all time.

Just sayin.

ugh. Here we go again.

Saturn < PSone

DC < PS2

I thought that Saturn > PS1, just that Saturn was impossible to properly program for, so no-one could quite get the best out of it except Sega.

It did have incredibly complicated architecture yes. Don't know what Sega was smoking when they made those calls!

Saturn reeeaally struggled with 3d. It could render the best 2d gfx at the time, but couldn't compete with PSX and N64 i.t.o 3d gfx. There's lots of proof for that, but a quick look at Dead or Alive will be enough to convince you.

Does anyone remember the good old days when GAMEPLAY ruled games?  remember when people cared more about controls and level design and challenge and innovation rather than focussing on processing speed and framerate and bump mapping and shading?  Graphics are just the presentation, and yet so many developers (and an even higher percentage of gamers) care more about that than the core of the game.  It kinda sickens me becuase I'm finding more and more games are entirely unrefined when it comes to the basics, even when they look gorgeous.

This discussion is a testament to this paradigm shift in gaming:  The entire thread has been dedicated to laughing at Nintendo's attempt to 'keep up' with modern gaming becuause, apparently, a console can't be taken seriously if it doesn't support HD.  As I mentioned before, This is simply not the case, and the Wii proves that most people don't give a shit about graphics, only the 'core' gamers do, even though they're the people who should know better.

Also, I'm curious, how do I make my own thread on here?  I keep trying but cant find a 'make new thread' button anywhere.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

What irks me about this guy is that he basically contradicts himself; he says that the graphical capabilities need to be on par with current PCs to interest him, yet before that he says that even if the system is "way more powerful"than PS360, it's still not enough... guess he means it must be way, way more powerful?

Also the whole attitude that "even if one was donated to me, I wouldn't even open it out of the box"... seriously?!

I've been on that for a while.

Also, go to a main subject page, and right  above the thread list will be the "New Thread" button.
