It did have incredibly complicated architecture yes. Don't know what Sega was smoking when they made those calls!
Saturn reeeaally struggled with 3d. It could render the best 2d gfx at the time, but couldn't compete with PSX and N64 i.t.o 3d gfx. There's lots of proof for that, but a quick look at Dead or Alive will be enough to convince you.
