Forums - Sales Discussion - Some german numbers for first quarter 2007

I saw some numbers for sold console-games for germany. Source is 'media control' http://www.media-control.de/pressemitteilungen/uber-100-millionen-euro-umsatz-mit-konsolenspielen-im-ersten-quartal-2007.html (sorry, in german). They picked some numbers for this press-release, so it's far from complete. Some numbers are in percent, some absolute. In the quarter sold games worth 106 million Euro (how many the article does'nt say). The number of games sold increased by 16,6% and the transaction volume increased by 17,5%. The games for NDS sold now 24,0% of the units sold overall against 7,2% before (the article doesn't say if it is against the quarter before or the year before). Wii-games have 4,6% of the market. For PS3 sold 69000 games. PS2-games had 42,6% marketshare. The top 10 has 8 titles from Nintendo. Number one was Final Fantasy XII for PS2, #2 Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training for DS, #3 New Super Mario Bros for DS. #7 was Wii Play.

Some conclusions: * 106 million Euro make with around 50 Euro per game something around 2 million sold games. * 24,0% (NDS) + 4,6% (Wii) + 42,6% (PS2) = 71,2% -> PSP, PS3 and XBOX-games have around 30% market-share together.

"#2 Big Brain Acadamy for DS (called 'Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training' in germany)" I believe number 2 IS (Dr. Kawashima's) Brain Training. Big Brain Academy is whole different game (i do have them both). Brain Training do have a different name in NA, but now i cant remember what is was (but it's definately not BBA).

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

irgendwie kommt mir das ganze seltsam vor

wieviel prozent marktanteil sollen 69.000 spiele für die ps3 sein ?

...

i just said that it is strange and how much marketshare can be 69000 sold games from ps3.

maybe is the xbox360 really strong in germany ?

You may be right. I edit and only say the german name, I'm not really sure, how the correct english name is.

As I said, this press-release is far from complete numbers. If my calculation is right, that games are sold for an average 50 Euro that would make 2 million games total. The 69000 games for PS3 make then 3,5% marketshare. Not bad for only one week (the PS3 started at 23. march here in europe). But that number is only a guess, if more expensive or more cheaper games got sold, than my calculation is wrong.

Well, I would suspect that it was PSP, PS3, XBox, XBox 360, Gamecube and GBA make up approximately 30% of the market (assuming PC games are not also included in the calculations). Even with newer systems available I would be surprised if Gamecube, XBox and GBA did not make up close to 10% of the market. At the same time both the PSP and XBox 360 have been out for a while and should each be taking up close to 10% of the market.

You're right, I forgot about the older systems. But PC games were counted seperately.

Besides, games are not 50 € in Europe, they're 60 € or 70 €.

Even those for PS2 are 60 € when they come out. Wii games are 60 € too. XB360 and PS3 games are 70 €.  Of course, some of them are sold for less at launch (50 € or 60 €), but I don't think that was the case this quarter. FFXII was even 70 € IIRC.

DS Games are 30-40 EUR (#2 Brain Training is 30 EUR), so they pull the average back down to 50 EUR. 360 had 6 % percent unit share, according to heise.de. 2 million units is pretty tiny by the way. The US did 25 million units in Jan and Feb alone (at 350 % population). The German market on a per capita basis is at least 5 times weaker than the US market. Probably another 1.5 million PC game units were sold though.
