Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY: PS3 over 50m units sold and 8m MOVE units sold.

Very nice milestone indeed, so that means all of Sony's PlayStation products have sold over 50 million units worldwide (PS1,PS2,PSP and now the Ps3) pretty impressive when you think about it.

Congrats Ps3.

The 480m figure for software is wrong - someone hacked / miscalculated Sony's figures for the September 2010 quarter, raising the total by 16m units. About a month ago the latest Q2 figure changed to 51.9m units on Sony's documentation http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3soft_sale_e.html. Q3 is the December quarter, and we all know it wasn't a mere 15% bigger than the September quarter with GT5 & COD: Black Ops doing 13m or whatever on PS3 alone, plus the usual holiday rises and other big titles.

PS3 SW shipments were 350.5m through September 2010 - see the official shipment results thread, on a 35m quarter and then 57.6m games shipped in the December 2010 quarter, for 408.2m units lifetime. Actually, someone probably just did 408m instead of 480m for December 2010 figures lifetime. Given Sony's errors I'd imagine through March 2011, PS3 software shipments are 430m - 440m units lifetime.

Even the official document is wrong?

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/110415_e.pdf

"With strong support from 3rd party developers and publishers worldwide, PS3 features a vast library of more than 2,128 software titles with more than 480 million units sold worldwide*7. Recently released blockbuster franchise titles from first party studios include Grand Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet2 and KILLZONE 3.

*7 As of the end of Dec, 2010"

I've spoken to Sony about this before and they've admitted to making typos in press-releases. They don't retract them because its not worth it usually.

408m / 480m is a pretty easy typo really through the end of 2010. I have Sony's shipments by quarter before the  edit to the September quarter on their site at these levels:

PS3 SW Mar Q Jun Q Sept Q Dec Q
2006 5.2
2007 8.1 4.7 10.4 26
2008 16.8 22.8 21.2 40.8
2009 18.9 14.8 23.9 47.6
2010 29.3 24.8 35.3 57.6

You'll notice the numbers are exactly the same, save for the September 2010 quarter as on Sony's website http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3soft_sale_e.html which as I say was changed a month ago and doesn't make sense with the seasonality of the December 2010 quarter and the magnitude of titles released - GT5, COD, etc.

Well done PS3, a good job there. Here's to another 50 million.

I got now... but I'm confuse yet.

* 480m is a wrong or typo... ok.
* The sum of the numbers in Sony website is 424.8m.
* The sum of the numbers in your table is 408.2m.

What the real number? 480m, 408.2m or 424.8m?

Over 50m? How much over? Like 360 (over 50m = 50.8m)?

And how much can Sony ship in more 2 days for 31th March (Q4) numbers?

CONGRATS PS3... NEXT MILESTONE: 100 MILLION.

Isn't that a little too high to aim? Shouldn't the next milestone be 75 million? I am not saying ps3 can't reach 100 million, but if it does it will be at the end of the lifecycle.

I am.

I have only 4 words for you........

They also made another typo too when they said they sold 130M PS1 when they really meant 103M.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

mario maker

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

zelda U

majora's mask 3d

Sony or some hacker changed the September 2010 number from 35m to 52m on Sony's investor relations website about a month ago - several months after that quarter had ended. It was 408m through December 2010.

That is very true ...

Actually, I wonder what else has goen unnoticed ... funny how all these typo's seem to be benefiting them.

The PS1 thing wasn't a typo, that was just imcompetence by the gaming press. Sony never claimed 27m PS Ones in addition to 103m of the original devices, it was clearly 27m out of 103m, someone just mis-read it.
