I've spoken to Sony about this before and they've admitted to making typos in press-releases. They don't retract them because its not worth it usually.
408m / 480m is a pretty easy typo really through the end of 2010. I have Sony's shipments by quarter before the edit to the September quarter on their site at these levels:
| PS3 SW | Mar Q | Jun Q | Sept Q | Dec Q |
| 2006 | 5.2 | |||
| 2007 | 8.1 | 4.7 | 10.4 | 26 |
| 2008 | 16.8 | 22.8 | 21.2 | 40.8 |
| 2009 | 18.9 | 14.8 | 23.9 | 47.6 |
| 2010 | 29.3 | 24.8 | 35.3 | 57.6 |
You'll notice the numbers are exactly the same, save for the September 2010 quarter as on Sony's website http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3soft_sale_e.html which as I say was changed a month ago and doesn't make sense with the seasonality of the December 2010 quarter and the magnitude of titles released - GT5, COD, etc.
