Now I am a huge Mario Party fan, at one time or another I have owned every single Mario Party game. I recently bought MarioParty2 on VC. I bought a copy of MarioParty8 launch day however somebody borrowed it about a year ago and I can't remember who. I've asked my friends who borrowed it but everyone says they didn't. I guess a lesson learned , don't trust your friends to return your stuff.

But the question is not about my friends. I am going up North for a few months to live with my mom again. During that time I will be bringing my Wii. My mom used to play MarioParty 64 with me when I was a pre-teen/teen. I know she loves the game and since their is no internet access other then dial up, no cable and the nearest city is over half an hour away. I decided I'd buy MarioParty8 again so that we could play it.

But then I thought, what about WiiParty? Nintendo was marketing it as such a great party game. It honestly looked interesting. But I hate WiiSports/WS:Resort/WiiMusic and can barely stand WiiPlay. As such I counted WiiParty out pretty quickly last year. But now I'm having second thoughts. Also I am like a few hundred points from platinum status through ClubNintendo and regestering WiiParty would give me another 60 points, so this got me wondering if I rebuy MarioParty8 I can't regester the second copy.

So other then the ClubNintendo thing, is WiiParty a better party game then MarioParty and if it is why is it so?

My mom and I loved playing the board games because it seemed familiar. I loved the board games in MarioParty8 are their board games in WiiParty? (Example of what kind of things could be used as plus's for WiiParty)

I would love to hear the positives and negatives to rebuying MarioParty8 over WiiParty or Vice versa, could you help me?

well in wii party the minigames are more luck-based than ability-based, but the pacing is better and the game is a lot more quick (i always hated that in mario party it takes ages to get to your turn).

another thing in wii party's favor is that in the game there are a couple of game modes in which you have to interact in the real world (ex. : you have to hid all the wii remotes in the room then other players have to find them) that are really, really fun.

WiiParty is not the same as Mario Party, Mario Party is a board game, but WiiParty only got one game mode that is a board game, the others are different kinds of game modes, also there is only one level in each game mode (which is kinda disappointing), and each game mode has you playing Mini games like Mario Party , but all in all, Mario Party is more enjoyable and have more variety in it, and also have some unique ideas that you will sure enjoy, only problem with it is that its very short.

I LOVE Mario Party series (I hve played all but 3), but 8 seemed too clunky controlwise for me.

Wii Party fixed  lot that was wrong with Mario Party in sacrifice of the italian plumber and his gang. It was for the better, I cn assure you.

I had MP8, but I've sold it after buying Wii Party. One of the things that really bugged me about MP8 that it wasn't widescreen, Wii Party fixes that. Also the game is much faster to jump into with a varying degrees of gameplay choices, you have alone challenges or co-op (one afternoon spent playing co-op sokoban). The wheel of fortune and the standard board game was good fun. One obscure game where you have to find the cheater was a great laugh to play, trying to find out who had the advantage each round! WP feels much more diversed and accessible than MP8.

I like both and have found my family and I play both without either being a favorite.  

The descriptions of Wii Party above are all pretty accurate with the pacing and variety of game types being the greatest strength. 

I think, given the situation, you may eb better off with Mario Party 8 for the sheer fact you know it is something your mother and you will enjoy together rather than taking the risk that either you, her or both may not like Wii Party.   Perhaps rent Wii Party later on.

I think that Wii Party is way better than Mario Party on nearly every level.
